I’m looking to warm my pool faster without driving up my electric bill. I already have a basic solar cover but was thinking about adding a small heat pump to help boost the temperature on cooler days. Does anyone here run both at the same time? Wondering if the combo actually speeds things up or if it’s not worth the extra cost.

I run both and it definitely helps. The solar cover keeps most of the heat in and the pump doesn’t have to work nearly as hard. My heat pump cycles less often now.

I didn’t see a huge difference on really cold nights but during the day the combo works well. The biggest benefit is reduced heat loss from evaporation which the cover handles.

Only caution I’d give is to get a heat pump that’s sized correctly. I went too small at first and it struggled even with the solar cover. Upgraded and now the setup works great.

I run that combo as well, and I’d say it works best if you think of the cover as the multiplier rather than the heater itself. The heat pump adds warmth steadily, but the solar cover is what stops you from losing it overnight or on breezy days. Without the cover, a lot of what the pump does just evaporates back into the air.

One thing that helped me was being disciplined about when the cover stays on. I leave it on whenever the pool isn’t in use, even during the day if it’s cool or windy. That way, when the heat pump runs, the temperature actually creeps up instead of stalling. On mild sunny days, I’ve even skipped running the pump and let the cover do most of the work.

It won’t perform miracles during cold snaps, but for shoulder-season swimming it shortens warm-up time and keeps running costs in check. If your goal is faster heating and holding that heat longer, the combo makes a lot of sense, just don’t expect the pump alone to carry the load without the cover doing its part.

Before the cover, the pump would run, temp would bump a degree or two, then overnight it’d vanish thanks to evaporation. Total slacker behavior from the pool, not the equipment.

Once I got serious about keeping the solar cover on anytime we weren’t swimming, things changed. The heat pump actually started making progress instead of treading water. On mild days, especially with sun and low wind, I’ll leave the cover on most of the day and the temp climbs without the pump working that hard. On cooler days, the pump fills the gap and the cover keeps that heat from bleeding off.

One thing I didn’t expect was how much cleaner the water stayed when the temp stabilized. Less evaporation meant chemistry wasn’t drifting as much, pH stopped bouncing around, and my saturation index stayed more predictable. I also started using aquadoc natural heat lock instead of a basic bubble cover on one stretch, mostly to cut evaporation further, and it helped hold temp overnight when the air got chilly.

It won’t turn a cold snap into summer, but for shoulder season swimming it absolutely shortens warm-up time and saves energy. If the pump is sized right and you’re disciplined about using the cover, the combo makes a lot of sense. Anyone else notice their heat pump barely does anything unless evaporation is under control first?

From what Manikshaw mentioned about the biggest impact coming from the cover, I’ve felt the same. The heat pump helps raise the temperature, but the cover is what keeps it from dropping by reducing evaporation. In my pool, once I consistently used the cover at night, the heater didn’t have to run as long and energy use stayed more controlled. So the combo makes sense, but if I had to prioritize efficiency, the cover usually does more of the heavy lifting.
 
I’m running both and I’d honestly say they kind of depend on each other. The first spring I had just the heat pump and no cover, it felt like I was trying to heat the neighborhood. I’d gain maybe a degree or two during the day and then lose most of it overnight once the air dipped and evaporation kicked in.

Once I added a decent solar cover and actually used it consistently, the whole system made sense. The heat pump brings the temp up steadily, but the cover is what lets it stick. On calm sunny days I’ve seen 3 to 4 degrees of gain over a couple days without the pump working that hard, because I’m not bleeding heat off the surface. The key is discipline, cover on whenever you’re not swimming.

Sizing matters too. A small heat pump can maintain temp fine with a cover, but if you’re trying to jump 10 degrees fast, it’s going to feel slow. Heat pumps are better at holding than sprinting. I also noticed my evaporation rate dropped a lot with the cover, which meant less top off water and more stable alkalinity and pH overall.

So yeah, the combo works. The cover handles heat retention, the pump handles controlled gain. If you’re trying to warm faster without crushing your electric bill, stopping heat loss first is half the battle.
