Anyone Using Ozone + UV Combo Systems? Worth the Upgrade?

I’ve been researching alternative sanitizers and came across combo systems that use both ozone and UV together. The idea sounds great less chlorine, clearer water and fewer chemical smells but I’m wondering if it’s actually worth it in real life. Anyone here tried one out? How’s the maintenance and reliability over time?

I installed an ozone + UV setup last season and honestly love it. My chlorine demand dropped by almost half and the water feels softer with zero odor. The only thing is the bulbs need replacing every year or so and the ozone generator needs to be kept dry or it clogs easily.

I looked into those but skipped it because of cost. It works great for pools with high bather loads but if your pool’s small or you’re not running it daily, it may not be worth the install and upkeep price. It doesn’t fully replace chlorine, so keep that in mind.

I’ve had mine for two years now. Setup wasn’t bad but make sure your plumbing layout allows space for both units mine had to be reconfigured a bit. Water clarity is unbeatable though especially after big pool parties. It’s definitely more set it and forget it once it’s dialed in.

After using ozone + UV, I noticed my chlorine demand dropped a lot and the water feels softer with no smell. But, the bulbs need replacing every year and the ozone generator clogs easily.

I’ve been running an ozone plus UV combo for a bit now, added it after getting tired of that “used pool” smell every time we had friends over. On paper it sounds amazing, and honestly, when everything is dialed in, it does what it’s supposed to do. Chlorine demand dropped, combined chlorine basically disappeared, and the water stays that clear, glassy look even after heavy bather load days.

That said, it’s still a support system, not a replacement. Ozone and UV only work when water is moving through them, so you still need a baseline sanitizer in the pool. I keep a low, steady chlorine level and focus more on oxidation than dumping more chlorine in. Maintenance wise, the UV bulb replacement is real, and ozone units don’t love moisture or neglect. If circulation or filter pressure is off, the benefits drop fast. Chemistry still matters too, pH drift and alkalinity swings will mess with how well the whole setup feels.

Where it shines is reducing how often the water feels “tired.” I shock way less now, and when I do, I usually reach for aquadoc non chlorine shock just to burn off organics without spiking FC. Worth the upgrade if you already stay on top of basics and run your system daily. If someone’s hoping it makes the pool hands off, it won’t. Anyone else notice these systems really show their value after big swim weekends more than on quiet weeks?

Yep, that’s on point, UV helps inside the unit as water passes and can reduce chloramines, but you and I still need chlorine in the pool water as a continuous residual, so don’t drop your FC target too far just because you added UV.

I looked into this at one point too. From what I’ve seen in real use, combo systems like that can make the water feel nicer and cut down odors, but they do come with trade-offs. You still need to stay on top of the equipment, and if one part isn’t working right, you notice it fast. I think it works best if you’re consistent with upkeep, not as a set-it-and-forget-it setup.
