Anyone using the Eagle Ray test kit?

So I tried out the Eagle Ray test kit last week. Seemed decent, but I swear the colour strips look different depending on where I stand lol. Like the results shift under sunlight vs inside lighting. I don't know, maybe I am being picky, but just curious if anyone else noticed that? Also, how does it compare with digital testers, if anyone’s used both?

I’ve noticed that too. If I read the test strip in direct sunlight, the colors always look way lighter. I try to read them in the same indoor lighting every time to stay consistent. I also use a digital tester sometimes for pH and chlorine and honestly, it takes the guesswork out of color matching. But strips are still quicker for a fast check.

Yeah, lighting makes a difference. I usually test indoors by a window, not in direct sunlight. Eagle Ray strips are pretty decent, but digital testers are way easier on your eyes if you want precise numbers. The downside is digital ones cost more and need calibration sometimes. I keep both around depending on how picky I’m feeling that day.

Oh you’re not being picky, that’s a real thing. Bright sun always throws off my readings. I switched to a small handheld digital tester this year and it’s a game-changer. No more squinting at colors and wondering if I got it right. Strips are fine for quick checks though, especially when the kids are already bugging me to jump in.

Yeah, the lighting thing can get tricky. I’ve been using a digital tester mostly for accuracy, but sometimes I go back to the strips for a quick check. Feels like a balancing act both have their place depending on how serious I want to get with it that day.

I actually prefer a mix of both, depending on the situation. The strips are super handy for quick checks when I’m in a rush, but when I need precise numbers, I don’t mind taking the extra time with a digital tester or drop kit. I like the Eagle Ray strips, but I usually use them as a backup and cross-check with my digital tester for more confidence in the results.

I had the same light drama! One thing that helped me was wearing a light gray glove when I hold the strip creates a neutral background so I’m not fooled by bright sun or weird shadows. I also carry a small clip-on shade (like for phone cameras) that blocks glare. Gives me way more confidence in those tricky midday readings. Anyone else tried a glove or mini-shade trick?

I tried something wacky: I slipped the strip into a tiny zip-lock bag, then held it up behind my polarized sunglasses felt like a spy on a pool mission, but the glare vanished and the colors lined up perfectly. Anyone else got a fun DIY trick like that?

I started treating my Eagle Ray strip like a concert ticket—hold it under my phone’s flashlight in portrait mode, then compare. Instant VIP seating for colors, zero guesswork even at dusk!

I’ve noticed that with the Eagle Ray strips, even your viewing angle can affect how the colours appear. If you tilt it slightly or hold it too close to your face, the shadows change the shade just enough to throw you off. I started laying the strip flat on a white piece of paper and looking straight down at it, that way the light hits evenly and I’m not second-guessing my eyes. It’s not as fancy as a digital tester, but it’s helped me get more consistent readings without extra gear.

Small hack that saved me: read Eagle Ray strips on a white plate under a 5000K desk lamp no windows. Once I standardized light, readings got consistent. Got a lamp to try?
