I run bromine in my spa and had the same hesitation at first, especially since most testers are talked about in a chlorine context. In practice, the eagle ray works fine with bromine, but only if you treat bromine like its own thing and not just “chlorine with a different name.”
The biggest mistake I made early on was testing straight out of a hot spa. Bromine reactions seem more sensitive to temperature, so if the water is piping hot, the strip can react too fast and the reader locks in a number that feels off. Letting the sample sit for even 30 to 60 seconds so it cools a bit made my readings way more consistent. Also make sure you’re actually using the bromine-specific strips and not reading bromine on a chlorine scale, that alone can make it look wildly wrong.
One other thing to keep in mind is bromine demand. If you’re using ozone or non chlorine shock regularly, bromine can drop faster than you expect. That sometimes makes it feel like the tester is lying, when it’s really just chemistry moving quicker in a hot, small body of water with a decent bather load. I’ll occasionally cross-check with a simple drop kit, and when I do, the eagle ray is usually right in line as long as my process is consistent.
For day to day spa care, I trust it. I just don’t rush the test, don’t sample boiling hot water, and I focus more on trends than a single reading. Once I adjusted my routine, it stopped feeling “skewed” and started feeling predictable, which is really all I want from a tester.
