Are robotic vs suction vacuums worth the upgrade?

Thinking about getting a robotic cleaner, but not sure if it’s worth it over my current suction cleaner. Does it really save time?

Robotic cleaners are totally worth it in my opinion. I switched from a suction cleaner last year and it saves me a ton of time. Robotic vacuums are self-contained, so they don’t rely on your pool’s pump or filter, which also saves wear on your system. They climb walls, scrub the waterline, and filter fine debris way better than my old suction cleaner ever did. Plus, you can just set it and walk away.

I used a suction cleaner for years and it did the job, but I was constantly unclogging it and it missed corners. The robotic cleaner was a bigger investment upfront, but it keeps my pool cleaner with less daily effort. I just drop it in a few times a week and let it run while I’m doing other things. Way less hassle, and my water stays clearer overall.

I was in the same boat! I ended up trying a robotic cleaner, and honestly, I love that I can set it and forget it especially when I’m multitasking. The only thing I didn’t expect was how much quieter it is compared to the suction one. It really makes a difference when I’m chilling by the pool. Anyone else surprised by how quiet the robotic ones are?

Hey Zoe, yeah, I switched from a suction cleaner to a robot last season and honestly wish I did it sooner. The suction one was fine, but I always felt like I had to babysit it. It’d miss spots or get stuck on the steps.

The robot’s not perfect, but it saves time. Just drop it in and let it do its thing. I still brush the walls once a week, but overall the pool stays way cleaner. Also doesn’t rely on the pump, so it doesn’t mess with my system flow like the old one did.

The only downside is the price, tbh. The upfront cost is higher, but it paid off for me in less hassle and not having to run the pump as long.

I was on the fence too, then I gave a robot a whirl and now I can’t go back! One hack: set your robot to run at night when the pool light is on makes it clean in style and I wake up to crystal-clear water. Plus, if you time it right, you’ll never bump into it mid-swing with your drink. Worth every penny for those lazy mornings! Anyone else tried a nocturnal clean cycle?

I’m still in the ‘manual squad’ partly because I kinda enjoy the whole vacuuming ritual with a cold drink and music in the background 😄 It’s like pool therapy! But reading all your replies is making me seriously consider a robot... Anyone made the switch and then missed doing it by hand,

I was on the fence too my old suction vac felt like cardio but after trying a robot, it’s like having a silent butler for my pool. I just pop it in, grab a cold drink, and voilà: pool’s spotless without me breaking a sweat!

I used to think my suction cleaner was “good enough,” but what finally pushed me toward a robot wasn’t just convenience; it was consistency. With the suction model, I’d get random good days and random bad days depending on water flow, filter condition, or even wind direction.

The robotic cleaner, on the other hand, gives me the same thorough result every single run, no matter what else is going on with the pool system.

It also surprised me how much less fine debris I see floating around. The built-in filter basket on mine catches stuff my main filter would’ve missed, so the water looks brighter between cleanings.

I still do the occasional manual brush for stubborn spots, but I spend way less time wondering if the cleaner “did its job” because I can see the difference.

I’ve been considering a robotic cleaner for a while now, too. Honestly, I feel like they’d be a game-changer for my pool routine. I love how it does the work without me having to hover over it all the time. But still wondering if it’s worth the price. What’s everyone’s experience with that balance of investment versus convenience?

I was in the same boat, debating between the two. I ended up getting a robotic vacuum, and I honestly can’t imagine going back. The best part is being able to set it and forget it. Plus, it’s way quieter than my old suction cleaner. Anyone else noticed how much smoother the pool water feels after using a robotic cleaner?

I was a suction vac holdout for years, but once I finally tried a robot, the difference was night and day. Suction cleaners always depended too much on how clean the filter was or how strong the pump happened to be running. The robot doesn’t care about that, it’s got its own motor and filter, so it’s consistent every time.

The biggest win for me was the time savings. I just drop it in, set the cycle, and go about my evening. By the time I check back, the floor and walls are spotless. My power bill hasn’t spiked either since I don’t have to run the main pump as long for cleaning.

If budget allows, I’d say it’s a solid upgrade. You’ll still want to brush now and then, but the robot cuts the weekly chore list down to almost nothing.

I’ve stuck with my suction vac for a while because it felt “good enough,” but after borrowing a friend’s robot for a week, I realized the biggest benefit isn’t just cleaner water, it’s the time you get back. With suction, I was always checking if it was stuck or if the flow was strong enough. The robot just quietly did its job, no babysitting.

The only thing that made me hesitate was storage space since you’ve got to keep the power unit and cord somewhere dry. But if you’ve got the budget and a spot to tuck it away, it really does feel like moving from a flip phone to a smartphone, you won’t want to go back.

I used to swear by my suction vac, mainly because it was simple and already hooked up to the system. But after borrowing my neighbor’s robot for a weekend, I was honestly shocked at the difference. It didn’t just pick up debris, it scrubbed the floor and even climbed the walls, which my old cleaner never managed to do properly.

The main thing I noticed is how much time it frees up. I used to babysit the suction vac to make sure it wasn’t stuck somewhere. Now, I just drop the robot in, hit the button, and go about my day.

Yeah, the price tag stings at first, but it pays off in saved time and better water clarity. I still use the suction one once in a while for quick touch-ups, but the robot’s basically running the show now.

I went back and forth on this for a full season because my suction vac technically worked. It picked stuff up, eventually. The problem was everything around it. Flow had to be just right, filter had to be clean, hose would kink, and half the time I’d walk outside and it was stuck in the same corner like it gave up. I was still brushing, still vacuuming manually sometimes, and still dealing with random dust settling after windy days.

When I finally upgraded to a robot, the biggest difference wasn’t how spotless the pool looked, it was consistency. Same result every run, regardless of filter condition or pump schedule. It scrubs while it vacuums, catches way finer debris, and doesn’t add load to the system. I noticed my filter pressure rose slower overall because the robot was handling a lot of the gunk before it ever hit the main filter. Chlorine demand evened out too, less junk sitting around feeding it. I still brush steps and tight corners once a week, but that’s quick now, not a workout.

Is it worth it for everyone? If your suction cleaner already does the job and you don’t mind babysitting it, maybe not. But if you value time and predictable results, the robot earns its keep fast. I paired it with a light weekly enzyme from aquadoc and now the robot runs cleaner cycles instead of fighting buildup. Less effort, clearer water, fewer “why does the pool look tired again” moments.

I don’t miss standing there watching a hose snake around, that’s for sure. Anyone else notice their whole maintenance routine got simpler after the switch, not just vacuuming?
