Best base prep for above ground pool?

I’m setting up an above ground pool in the backyard and trying to make sure I get the base right the first time. Ground is mostly level but has some minor uneven spots. I’ve heard everything from sand to foam pads to just compacted soil. For those who’ve done this before, what worked best long term?

Compacted soil with a thin layer of sand worked great for me. The key was spending extra time leveling before the pool even went up. Once it’s filled, there’s no easy fixing it.

I used foam boards over leveled ground and really liked it. It felt softer underfoot and seemed to protect the liner better from small rocks.

Whatever route you go, remove all grass and roots first. I skipped that step in one area and ended up with uneven settling after a few months.

Sounds like prep work is everything. I’ll take extra time on leveling and clearing before deciding between sand or foam. Appreciate the advice.
