Crystal clear, then cloudy again

The pool was clear after shock, but got cloudy again after a swim day. Should I re-shock or check something else first?

I’d test your chlorine and pH first before shocking again. Cloudiness right after a heavy swim day usually means your sanitizer got used up. If free chlorine is low, then yeah re-shock. But also check your filter pressure. A dirty or undersized filter can’t keep up when the bather load spikes.

Had the exact same issue after a pool party. Turned out my filter needed a deep clean, not more chemicals. I backwashed and cleaned it thoroughly, then ran it non-stop for 24 hours. Water cleared right up without needing another shock. So yeah, test levels first and don’t forget the filter.

I had the same thing happen after a swim day. Turns out, my filter needed a deep clean, so the water couldn’t be filtered properly. After backwashing and running the pump for 24 hours, the water cleared up without needing another shock. Maybe check the filter first, that could be the issue!

I’ve had this happen too, after a swim day the pool went cloudy again. It’s usually because the filter’s not catching the debris properly. Try checking the filter and doing a backwash, the water usually clears up without needing another shock.

Sometimes it isn’t just chlorine or the filter; high swimmer load can spike phosphates or other organics that feed cloudiness. I tossed in a small dose of enzyme treatment after busy weekends, and it kept the water clear without extra shocking. It might be worth considering if this keeps happening after swim days.

I’ve run into that before and in my case it wasn’t just chlorine or the filter. The water balance overall was a bit off. I checked alkalinity and calcium hardness, and once I corrected those, the cloudiness stopped coming back after heavy swim days. If those levels are out of range, the water can look clear right after shocking but then turn hazy again pretty quickly. Might be worth running a full set of tests instead of focusing only on chlorine and the filter.
