Do sand filters really need to be replaced after a few years?

A neighbour told me that the sand in a pool filter only lasts 3–5 years before it stops working right and you have to swap it out. I’ve had mine for almost 7 years and the water still looks fine so I’m confused if that’s just a myth or if I’m overdue for changing it.

Honestly I think people change it too soon. I’ve had my filter running with the same sand for 10 years and it still works. Just backwash regularly and maybe deep clean the sand once a season. Unless you see performance drop it’s not always worth replacing.

I changed mine after 6 years and the difference was big. The old sand was clumped together and not catching the fine stuff anymore. Water cleared up way faster once the new sand went in. You might not notice until you compare side by side.

I’ve had my filter running for about 8 years with the same sand, and after a good cleaning, the water stayed clear. Unless you notice performance dropping, you really don’t need to replace the sand too soon.

I’ve wondered about this too. If the water is still clear and the pressure looks normal, the sand is usually fine even after years. I only replace mine when clearing gets harder or performance drops.
