Do UV pool systems still need regular chlorine?

I’m thinking about adding a UV sanitation system to my pool. Some people say it reduces chlorine use a lot but others say you still need normal chlorine levels. Can UV replace chlorine or does it just help a little?

UV systems help kill bacteria as water passes through but they don’t leave sanitizer in the pool. You still need chlorine for ongoing protection.

Think of UV as a helper not a replacement. It can reduce how hard chlorine has to work, but it can’t protect the whole pool by itself.

Most manufacturers recommend keeping standard chlorine levels even with UV, just sometimes at the lower end of the range.

Got it. Sounds like UV is more of a booster than a replacement. I’ll plan on keeping chlorine in the mix. Thanks everyone!

Exactly, minerals can help suppress algae a bit, but you and I still need adequate chlorine, and if metals build up or pH runs high, staining can become the headache.

I’m with what Zephyr said. From what I’ve seen, UV mainly helps take some load off the sanitizer so it doesn’t get used up as fast. You still need chlorine doing its job, just with less stress on the system and fewer sudden issues to worry about.
