Do you usually grill or order food in for backyard parties?

Whenever I host, I get stuck deciding between firing up the BBQ or just getting takeout. Curious what most of you do, cook for everyone, or keep it easy and order?

I usually lean toward grilling just because it sets the mood, and people enjoy hanging around while the food’s cooking. That said, I’ll be honest, if I know the crowd is big or time is tight, I’ll mix it up with some catered trays or pizza to take the pressure off. It keeps things relaxed, and nobody’s waiting too long for food. Kind of depends on how much energy I’ve got that day.

I usually split it, grill the basics like burgers and sausages so it feels like a proper backyard get-together, then order in a few extras like wings or sides. That way there’s something for everyone, and I’m not chained to the grill the whole time. People seem to like the mix, and it takes the stress out of trying to cook every single thing.

I usually decide based on why we’re getting together. If it’s a relaxed hangout where I actually want to chat and move around, I’ll order food and just put out snacks so I’m not disappearing behind the grill all evening. It keeps things flowing and I don’t feel rushed.

If it’s more of a daytime thing or a smaller group, then I’ll grill, but I keep the menu super simple and prep everything ahead of time. Fewer items, less flipping, less stress. I’ve learned the hard way that trying to be a backyard chef for a crowd just turns into work instead of fun.

Honestly, guests don’t really care how the food shows up as long as it’s good and on time. I’d rather enjoy my own party than impress anyone.

I used to always grill because it felt like the “right” backyard move, but the problem was I barely enjoyed my own party. I’d be stuck flipping stuff while everyone else was in the pool, then by the time I sat down I was already tired and half the food smell was still on me. Not terrible, just not relaxing.

Now I decide based on how long I want people in the water. If it’s a longer hangout or evening thing, I usually order in and just handle snacks. Way less stress and I actually get to float around and talk instead of babysitting the grill. The funny part is nobody seems to care, they’re just happy the food shows up and they don’t have to think about it.

If I do grill, I keep it stupid simple. Burgers or hot dogs only, everything prepped ahead. Greasy food plus high bather load does mean the water can get a little funky later, so I usually plan on a quick skim and an enzyme treatment the next morning. I’ve been using aquadoc natural spa enzyme for that and it helps knock down the sunscreen and food oils so the water doesn’t look dull the next day.

End of the day, I’d rather enjoy my own pool than prove I can cook for a crowd. Guests remember the vibe way more than whether the food came off a grill or out of a box.

I usually split it, I grill the easy stuff like burgers or hot dogs for the backyard vibe, then I order the rest so I’m not trapped at the grill while everyone else is in the water, especially with a crowd where heat and fine grit get tracked in and I want time to watch skimmer load and keep circulation steady. Result is food stays on schedule, I actually get to hang out, and the pool stays easier to manage. Are you usually hosting in the hot daytime or more like late afternoon into night?

Honestly these days I usually mix it up, cook a little myself and order the rest so I’m not exhausted. I used to grill everything and ended up stuck by the BBQ while the bather load was high and the pool needed attention too. Once I kept the menu simpler and less greasy, the water was easier to manage and I didn’t get that oily surface ring as fast. For me it’s more important that I enjoy the party instead of playing full-time chef.
