Does Filter Media Age Affect Water Clarity Gradually?

In my experience, yes, clarity can fade little by little as filter media ages even when pressure looks fine. The water just doesn’t polish the same way anymore, so it stays slightly dull instead of crisp. It’s subtle, but over time you notice the pool never quite looks “finished.”

I’ve seen that happen gradually. Even when pressure stays normal, older filter media doesn’t trap the fine stuff as well anymore. The water stays clean enough, but it loses that sharp, polished look over time without any obvious warning signs.

Yes. Aging filter media can still show normal pressure, but it won’t trap fine particles as effectively. The water stays clean, just not as crisp or polished as before. It’s gradual, so you don’t always notice until you compare it.

I’m leaning toward what Edward Williams mentioned. I’ve experienced the same thing, pressure looked normal but the water just didn’t have that sharp look anymore. In my pool, the saturation index was fine and pressure steady, yet very fine particles seemed to slip through. Over time the water stayed clean, just not as crisp. That’s usually when I know the media is getting tired even without a pressure spike.
