Ever had a pool disaster you didn’t see coming?

Last season, I came home from work and noticed the water level had dropped way more than usual. Turned out I had a small crack near the return line, and it had been leaking for days. Didn’t notice until the grass near the pad was soaked. It wasn’t fun to fix. made me wonder what kind of issues other folks have run into. equipment failure, leaks, chemical mix-ups, whatever. Curious to hear what can go wrong so I can try to avoid it this time around.

I feel your pain on the leak. I had something similar a couple of years ago when my filter cracked during a freeze. I didn’t notice until I saw the water level drop overnight and found a puddle by the pump. Another time, my chlorinator clogged and dumped a ton of chlorine into the pool, bleaching the liner. Honestly, most disasters I’ve had were things I could’ve caught earlier with a quick weekly inspection. Now, every weekend, I check around the pad for damp spots, inspect fittings for hairline cracks, and listen for odd noises from the pump and heater. Catching stuff early saves so much hassle.

I’ve had my share of surprises too. Once, I accidentally mixed two different types of algaecide, and the water turned cloudy for days. Another time, a power surge fried my timer, and the pump stopped running while I was away, leaving the water green when I got back. Now I label all my chemicals and unplug my equipment during storms. As far as leaks go, I keep an eye on water level changes and wet spots around the yard. I’ve found it helps to do a full system check at the start of each season and after any big storms. Most problems start small, but they snowball fast if you don’t catch them early.

Yikes, that sounds rough! I had a pipe fitting come loose once without realizing it, lost a ton of water before I noticed. Now I always check for drips and wet spots after running the system. A quick walkaround saves big headaches later!

I had one sneak up on me a couple summers back. Came out one morning and half the shallow end was covered in tiny bubbles. Thought it was just kids splashing the night before, but nope, turned out my pump seal had failed and air was getting sucked into the system. By the time I figured it out, the pump was screaming and the water flow was weak.

Didn’t expect something that small to cause such a big mess. Now I keep an ear out for any new sounds from the equipment pad. If it hums or gurgles weird, I don’t ignore it anymore.

I’ll skip posting if I don’t think I can add something new, but there is one sneaky one I didn’t see mentioned yet that bit me hard.

Couple years back I kept losing a little water and the pump sounded fine, no obvious puddles. Turned out the spider gasket in my multiport valve was shot. It only leaked when the pump was running and the filter pressure was up around 18 to 20 psi, so it never showed up during a quick glance. Water was slowly bleeding out the waste line and soaking the ground way downhill from the pad, total pain to trace. I only caught it because the water level drop lined up exactly with run time.

Another fun surprise was a heater pressure switch sticking closed. Pump basket was clean, flow looked ok, but low flow at startup meant the heater tried to fire dry for a second. Didn’t notice until the heater started short cycling and throwing weird errors. Now I always check filter pressure after backwashing and make sure the pressure rise after cleaning is normal, usually 4 to 6 psi on my setup.

Stuff like that is annoying because it’s not dramatic at first, just little clues adding up. Anyone else ever have a valve or sensor fail in a way that wasn’t obvious until it caused a bigger mess?
