I usually think in terms of time of day more than genre. Late afternoon, when people are still talking and moving around, I like stuff with a groove but nothing that hijacks the conversation. Old soul and mellow funk always work for me, Bill Withers, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, a little Fleetwood Mac. You feel it, but you don’t have to listen to it.
Once the sun drops, I dial it way back. That’s when lo-fi, chill electronic, or acoustic stuff shines. Tycho, Khruangbin, Bonobo, Jack Johnson, even some instrumental playlists. It turns into background texture instead of “music,” which somehow makes the whole yard feel calmer. I’ve noticed if the music’s too busy at night, nobody really relaxes, they just scroll or leave early.
One small thing I’ve learned is volume matters more than the playlist. Quiet enough that you can hear the water and people talking, but loud enough to kill awkward silence. When the pool looks calm and the music’s low, the whole space feels different.
So yeah, groove early, floaty later. If it feels like something you’d hear at a chill bar around sunset, you’re probably on the right track. Anyone else change playlists as the light changes, or am I overthinking it?
