How do I fix low water pressure in my pool jets?

Noticed lately that the water pressure from my pool jets is way lower than usual. Pump seems to be running fine, and nothing obvious looks wrong. What should I be checking first? Could it be a clog somewhere or maybe something with the filter?

Low pressure in the return jets is almost always tied to one of three things dirty filter, clogged pump basket, or an air leak. I’d start by checking your filter and giving it a deep clean or backwash depending on the type. Then make sure your pump basket is clear. If you still have low pressure, check the pump lid o-ring and fittings for any signs of air getting in that can mess with flow more than you'd think.

Testing your pool water more frequently during the summer months is important because heat can cause chemical imbalances much faster. In addition to pH and chlorine, you should also check your total alkalinity and calcium hardness regularly, as these can also fluctuate with higher temperatures and bather load. It’s also a good idea to check for total dissolved solids (TDS) every couple of months, as high TDS can reduce the effectiveness of your chemicals. Regular testing, combined with adjusting your pool care routine to account for the summer heat, can help maintain a balanced and healthy pool with fewer surprises.

Sometimes, water pressure issues can come from things that aren’t so obvious. Have you checked the pressure valve lately? It might be time for a quick check if you haven’t already. A simple adjustment could make a difference!”

I had the same thing happen earlier this season, the jets felt weak even though the pump sounded fine. First thing I did was check the filter, and sure enough, it was way dirtier than I thought. After a good backwash (I’ve got sand), the pressure improved a bit, but still wasn’t great.

Next, I pulled the pump basket and found a little wad of leaves stuck right where the line feeds into the impeller. Cleared that out, and the difference was huge.

One other thing I learned: even a tiny air leak on the suction side can make your jets feel sluggish. I went over the pump lid O-ring and union fittings with silicone lube and tightened everything up. Since then, the pressure’s been back to normal.

So I’d check in this order: filter, pump basket, impeller area, then hunt down any possible air leaks. Nine times out of ten, it’s one of those.

I ran into low jet pressure once, and after ruling out the obvious things like the filter and pump basket, the issue turned out to be calcium buildup inside the return lines. It wasn’t something I thought of right away, but over time, scale can narrow the pipes and slow the flow without completely blocking it.

If you live in an area with hard water, it might be worth checking for scaling. A good line flush with a descaling solution cleared mine out and brought the pressure back. It’s not the first thing most people check, but it can definitely cause weaker jets if the rest of the system looks fine.

I’ve seen weak jet pressure happen when the multiport valve wasn’t fully seated in the right position. It looked like it was on “filter,” but it was sitting just slightly off and causing a restriction.

Once I turned it through all the settings and clicked it firmly back to filter, the pressure came back right away. Might be worth giving yours a cycle if you haven’t already, sometimes those valves get a bit sticky.

I had a similar issue not too long ago, and what finally fixed it for me wasn’t the filter or basket, but the pump impeller itself. Even if the basket looks clear, fine debris can slip through and partially clog the impeller vanes. It doesn’t always block water completely, but it reduces flow enough that the jets feel weak.

If you’re comfortable doing it, shut the system down, open the pump housing, and take a look inside the impeller with a flashlight. You’d be surprised how often little bits of stringy leaves, hair, or even a small pebble can get stuck in there. Cleaning that out brought my pressure right back without touching anything else.

Might be worth a quick check before diving into bigger fixes.

Ah, sounds like a common issue. I had low water pressure once, and it was just a dirty filter and a little air leak. After checking and cleaning everything, the pressure was back to normal. Hope you get it sorted soon!
