How do you decorate your pool area for a night party?

Hosting a small night swim party next weekend and looking for fun decoration ideas that won’t break the bank. I’ve seen some people do lights or floating candles, but would love to hear what’s actually worked for you. What gives that relaxed evening vibe?

String lights are my go-to! I wrap them around the fence and umbrellas, and sometimes hang a few mason jars with LED candles inside. Also tried floating solar lights last year and they were such a vibe. Bonus: no wires or batteries.

Tiki torches and some LED lanterns around the pool deck do the trick for me. I also throw in a few colorful pool noodles and glowing beach balls in the water for fun. Cheap but it totally sets the tone for a casual night swim.

I go for a more quirky vibe I’ll fill up a few inflatable flamingos with LED lights and set them adrift in the pool. Looks goofy, but it’s the perfect chill party vibe. Anyone else try inflatable decorations?

I usually hang some string lights around the fence and trees, and put a few floating lights in the pool. It looks really nice at night and doesn’t cost much. Sometimes I add candles in jars for a little extra glow. Super easy and sets a chill vibe.

I drape sheer white curtains between the palms, let tea lights ripple in shallow bowls at the water’s edge, and string a single net of warm Edison bulbs overhead. As the lights dance on the ripples, it feels like swimming in a soft dream under the stars.

These all sound amazing! If you want to add a cozy vibe, try using floating lanterns or a few LED candles on the table. Not only does it look charming, but it also gives a nice warm glow without being too bright. Plus, it won’t break the bank!

I love setting up a cozy and relaxed vibe for night swims by adding some small lights. I usually put up LED lights around the pool and place a few candles in mason jars for a soft glow. To make it even more fun, I toss a few glowing beach balls into the water, and it just makes the whole pool come alive. It really helps set a chill mood, especially when friends are around enjoying the atmosphere.

I usually keep it simple but fun, some solar lanterns along the deck, a few glow sticks tossed into clear balloons for floating lights, and a Bluetooth speaker tucked out of the way for music. Cheap, easy, and it totally changes the vibe without a lot of effort.

For a relaxed night vibe, I like mixing a few layers of light. I hang a couple of string lights overhead, toss some battery-powered lanterns around the deck, and float a handful of LED orbs in the pool. Throw in some colorful towels or pillows on the chairs, and it instantly feels inviting without feeling over the top. The best part is that it’s all super easy to set up and move around if you want to change things mid-party.

Last summer I tried something simple but it worked surprisingly well, I used a few solar fairy lights inside empty wine bottles and lined them along the edge of the pool. Gave off this warm, soft glow without being too bright. I also tossed in a few glow sticks inside clear plastic cups that floated around, total budget move, but it looked awesome once it got dark.

One thing that made a big difference for us was focusing on the areas around the pool, not just the water itself. I used low path lights or even small stake lights to softly outline the walkways and steps. It sounds basic, but it makes everything feel intentional and keeps people from stumbling once it’s dark.

Another surprisingly nice touch was setting out rolled towels in a basket with a single soft light nearby. It instantly made the space feel more like a resort than a backyard. People actually commented on it, which I didn’t expect.

If your pool has a built-in light, dim it if possible or switch to a softer colour instead of bright white. That alone can change the mood from “night swim” to “relaxed evening hangout.”

I’ve found that a few thoughtful details beat piling on decorations. When guests feel comfortable moving around and hanging out, the vibe kind of takes care of itself.

What’s worked best for me is simple string lights or solar garden lights around the pool, combined with the pool light itself, it creates a relaxed evening vibe without spending much or overdoing it.

I used to think it was all about adding more lights, but what actually made my night parties feel different was layering the light instead of just making it brighter.

I keep the main pool light on but not at full blast. On my Pentair IntelliBrite I’ll switch to a softer color instead of bright white, it makes the water look deeper and calmer. Then I add one layer above eye level, usually warm string lights across the fence or pergola, and one layer low to the ground like small solar path lights outlining the walkway. That contrast is what gives it that relaxed vibe instead of “backyard stadium.”

One thing I didn’t expect was how much surface movement affects the look at night. If the water is flat, reflections can look harsh. I angle my returns slightly upward so there’s a gentle ripple across the surface. It makes the light shimmer instead of glare. I also make sure my filter pressure is at clean baseline before guests arrive because higher bather load at night can stir up fine debris, and cloudy water kills the whole mood fast even if chlorine and pH are technically fine.

Last little touch that felt almost resort-like was a small basket with rolled towels and a soft lantern next to it. Not expensive at all, but it makes the space feel intentional. Funny how a few subtle tweaks with light and flow can do more than a bunch of flashy decorations.
