How do you get your hot tub ready for the season?

It’s getting colder, and I’m about to open my hot tub for the season. Any tips on getting it up and running properly after being closed for months?

I’m the same way whenever I open my hot tub after it’s been closed for a while. I usually clean the filter, add fresh water, and run it for a bit to make sure everything’s working fine. Pretty simple stuff.

When I open my hot tub again, I usually clean the filter, add fresh water, and run it for a bit to make sure everything’s working. Then I do a quick pH check so you feel good before using it.

When I reopen mine after it’s been sitting, I try to think of it like waking the tub up slowly instead of rushing straight to soaking. First thing I do is a quick visual check, cover condition, seals, unions, and around the equipment bay, just to make sure nothing looks cracked or chewed up from sitting idle.

Before anyone gets in, I like to do a quick line flush or purge if it’s been closed for a long stretch. Even clean-looking tubs can have stale water sitting in the plumbing. After that, fresh fill, clean filter, and let it heat all the way up before testing and balancing. I’ve found readings make more sense once the water is at normal temp.

Last step is letting it run for a full cycle and checking again the next day. Takes a little patience, but it saves chasing weird water issues later.

A lot of the basics are covered already, so I’ll add what helped me avoid that “why does this feel off?” phase after reopening.

The biggest change I made was not trusting the first set of test results. After months of sitting, the plumbing and shell usually have stale water pockets, and the first heat-up shakes a lot of stuff loose. I fill, clean or swap the filter, bring it all the way up to soaking temp, then let it circulate overnight before doing any serious balancing. pH and alkalinity almost always drift once the jets start aerating again, so adjusting too early just had me chasing numbers twice.

I also pay attention to how the jets feel, not just whether they turn on. Weak flow or uneven pressure usually means there’s still air in the lines or debris sitting somewhere, even if the pump sounds fine. Letting it run a full cycle with all diverters open usually clears that up without me touching chemistry.

Last thing is patience. I don’t soak the same day anymore. I give it 24 hours, recheck sanitizer demand, and see how the water looks the next evening. When I started doing that, the water stayed stable way longer and I stopped fighting cloudiness a few days in. Anyone else notice tubs always behave better on day two than day one after opening?
