How do you tell when your pool filter’s had enough?

Hey everyone, so I’ve had my pool just over a year, and lately the water’s been looking a little cloudy. I’ve been keeping up with chems, but it’s not clearing up like it used to. I have a cartridge filter, rinsed it out a few times already. Is there a way to tell if it's just dirty or like...time to get a new one? Don’t wanna replace it if I don’t need to, but something seems off. thx in advance.

Cloudy water even with good chemical balance usually points to your filter losing its effectiveness. Cartridge filters work well when clean, but after a year of use especially if the pool’s been busy or dealing with a lot of debris—they can start to wear down. I’d pull out the cartridge and take a close look. If the pleats look frayed, the fabric feels soft or thin, or the plastic core has cracks, it’s probably time for a new one. Also, if you rinse it and the water still runs cloudy after several days of circulation, that’s a big clue your filter isn’t catching fine debris anymore. Some people stretch their cartridges into a second season, but after a year of heavy use, replacing it will probably clear your water faster than fighting it with chemicals alone.

I went through the same thing last summer. Thought my chemicals were fine, but the water stayed dull until I swapped out my cartridge. What tipped me off was having to rinse it more and more often with less improvement each time. When a clean cartridge doesn’t restore clarity after running the pump a full day or two, it’s usually worn out. Also, check if the cartridge feels squishy instead of firm it should still have some structure. I replaced mine after one season and the water cleared right up within a day. Sometimes saving a little longer on a filter means spending more on frustration.

I’ve run into something similar, and I found that sometimes a deep clean of the filter helps. Even if it looks like it's still good, algae or dirt buildup inside the cartridge can slow things down. You might want to take it out, soak it overnight in a cleaning solution, and see if that clears it up. Also, adding a flocculant helped my pool clear faster it binds all the fine particles together so the filter can catch it better. Just something else that worked for me when I was in a similar situation.

I’ve had the same issue, after using a cartridge filter for about a year, it started losing its effectiveness. If it doesn’t clear up even after cleaning, it’s probably time to replace it. Sometimes, dirt sticks to the filter and won’t come off anymore.

If the water is still cloudy even with the right chemicals, your cartridge filter might be losing its effectiveness. Check if the filter is too dirty or if the pleats are worn out. If so, it might be time to replace it.

I’ve seen the same issue. Try checking the cartridge, sometimes if debris builds up, the water won’t clear even with a clean filter. If needed, replace the cartridge to get the water clear again.

I had the same thing happen. After using a cartridge for about a year, it stopped working as well even after cleaning it. If the water still looks cloudy after a few good rinses, that’s usually a sign it’s time to replace it.
