How low do you drop the water for winter?

When closing your pool, it’s usually best to lower the water level about 4–6 inches below the skimmer. That helps prevent any water from getting into the skimmer and freezing over winter. Don’t forget to blow out the lines and plug them too if you’re in a freeze zone!

When I closed mine for the first time, I went with around 5 inches below the skimmer, and it worked great. I was more worried about freezing, so I also used a skimmer plug just to be safe. Honestly, better to go a little lower than risk damage. Learned that the hard way a couple seasons back!

When I first started closing my pool, I spent a lot of time worrying about the “perfect” water level, but what helped me most was checking what type of cover I was using. Some solid covers sit directly on the water, while others need a little gap.

That ended up guiding how far I lowered mine. I also keep an eye on rainfall in the weeks after closing. Sometimes I’ll have to pump out a bit more if the level creeps back up. It’s less about hitting an exact number and more about making sure the skimmer isn’t holding water when freezing temps roll in.
