How often do you backwash a DE filter if pressure barely moves?

This is my first full season with a DE filter and I’m a little unsure how aggressive I should be with backwashing. My pressure stays pretty steady most of the time maybe creeping up a pound or two but never hitting that big jump people talk about. Do you still backwash on a schedule or only when pressure really climbs?

I only backwash based on pressure rise not time. If it’s not climbing 20 25% over clean pressure, I leave it alone. Backwashing too often actually made my water clarity worse.

DE filters work best when they’re a little dirty. I used to backwash every couple weeks out of habit but once I stopped doing that everything stabilized.

Only time I break that rule is after a big storm or heavy debris. Even if pressure doesn’t spike, I’ll backwash just to reset things. Otherwise, I let the gauge tell the story.

If it were me, I wouldn’t rely on PSI alone, I’d also watch flow performance and clarity. DE actually filters finer once a light “cake” layer forms. In my pool, as long as the pressure rise is gradual and stays under about 20–25 percent above clean baseline, I leave it alone. Backwashing too often can interrupt that stable filtration cycle before the DE really does its best work.
