How often do you need to test the water?

During summer I’m testing almost daily, but is that overkill? Would love to hear how often others test and what you look for first.

I wouldn’t say daily is overkill, especially in the middle of summer. I usually test every other day when it’s hot out or if we’ve had a bunch of people in the pool.

Chlorine and pH are the two I check the most. If those are off, stuff goes downhill fast. If things have been stable for a while, I might back off to a couple of times a week, but I’d rather catch a problem early than deal with cloudy water later.

I treat my test strips like my morning espresso—can’t start the day without one! I usually dip strip + sip coffee by 9 AM, just to make sure my chlorine didn’t pull an overnight disappearing act. Works for me, but maybe I’m just caffeine-powered OCD?

I test right after my mid-day filter cycle water’s fully circulated and warmed, so readings are stable. Makes adjustments overnight way easier

I test almost every day too in the summer—just feels safer that way. Chlorine and pH are what I check first. It's easier to catch a problem early than deal with cloudy water later.

Interesting tips from everyone! I’ve been trying to check after heavy rain, as the weather can throw everything off. Also, I found that keeping a water log to track pH and chlorine levels helps me see trends over time rather than just doing spot checks.

I don’t stick to a fixed schedule, to be honest. If the pool’s been quiet and the weather’s steady, I might only test twice a week. But if we’ve had a few hot days, or the kids have been in and out all afternoon, I’ll check that evening just to be safe. I’ve learned that big swings usually happen after heavy use or storms, so that’s when I’m most careful. Daily isn’t overkill, but sometimes spacing it out works fine if things have been pretty stable.

I usually peek at my pool water almost every day in summer. Chlorine can dip surprisingly fast, and pH likes to wander around! I do a quick strip check midweek, then a proper test on weekends just to be sure everything’s behaving.

For summer, daily testing isn’t overkill if your pool gets heavy use or high heat, chlorine and pH can fluctuate fast. A good routine is: quick strip checks 2–3 times a week, more often if usage or weather is extreme, and a full test (drop kit or digital) once a week to catch any trends early.
