How often do you vacuum your pool and what’s your cleaning routine?

Hey guys, curious to hear what your regular pool cleaning routines look like. I vacuum mine manually once a week, but sometimes it feels like debris builds up too fast. Do you all vacuum more often, or use robotic cleaners?

I do a quick vacuum once a week too, but I run my robotic cleaner every 2-3 days during summer when leaves and dirt build up fast. Makes life way easier. I also brush the walls and steps twice a week to keep algae from starting. Skimming daily helps a ton.

I’m still new to this but I vacuum every weekend and skim the surface almost every day because we’ve got trees nearby. Thinking of getting a robot soon since manual vacuuming is tiring. For now, I just brush and skim regularly to stay ahead of the dirt.

I’ve got an automatic cleaner running every other day and still do manual vacuuming once a week. Plus, I brush the pool walls once a week and clean out the skimmer basket every couple of days. The routine keeps things mostly under control unless there’s a big storm.

I tend to vacuum once a week, but I also try to stay ahead by using a handheld skimmer each morning before I start the day. It’s a quick job, but it stops debris from collecting too much, especially after windy nights. If I’m dealing with a lot of pollen or tree debris, I might run my robot more often, but I try not to overdo it. Anyone else find the skimmer is a quick fix between vacuum days?

You know what’s helped me? I set a little ‘pool power hour’ every Sunday morning 15 minutes of vac, 5 minutes of brush, and a quick skimmer sweep. I put on a fun playlist and call it my ‘pool jam session.Turns chore time into chill time, and I actually look forward to it now. Plus, it keeps the dirt from getting out of hand. Anyone else turn pool cleaning into a mini event?

Honestly, I’ve kind of just embraced the ‘controlled chaos’ method 😅 Some weeks I’m on top of it, vacuuming and skimming like a pro. Other weeks? I just scoop out the big stuff and promise myself I’ll get to the rest tomorrow (which turns into next week). Anyone else ride the motivation rollercoaster with pool cleaning?

That sounds like a solid rhythm. I might try brushing more often like you do. I didn’t realize how much that could help with algae prevention.

Same boat here. The trees make daily skimming a must. Let me know if you get the robot. I'm curious how much easier it actually makes things.

Your setup sounds super dialed in. I think I need to get better about brushing. I always forget until something starts growing.

Totally agree about the skimmer. It’s my go-to for quick cleanup, especially after windy nights when stuff just piles up out of nowhere.

Okay I love the pool jam session idea. I might actually look forward to cleaning if I turn it into a vibe like that. Genius move.

Haha 100 percent relatable. Some weeks I’m the pool guru. Other weeks I’m just hoping no one looks too close at the bottom. Glad I’m not the only one.

I call it my ‘vacuum espresso shot’ every Sunday morning, I fire up the robot for 10 minutes, then grab my handheld vac for a quick 2-minute finish. Pool’s sparkling and I’ve still got time for breakfast tacos!

I try to keep things pretty consistent, especially during summer when the pool gets the most use. I run my robotic cleaner every couple of days, then do a manual vacuum once a week to get anything it misses along the steps, corners, and along the tile line. Brushing is just as important for me, usually twice a week, because it stops algae from forming before it becomes visible.

Skimming is a quick daily task, and I empty the skimmer baskets every other day so water circulation stays strong. If there’s been a storm or a lot of wind, I’ll usually bump up the cleaning schedule to get ahead of all the extra debris. It’s a bit of work, but staying on top of it means I’m never faced with a huge, time-consuming clean-up.

I used to do the same, vacuum once a week, but found myself doing extra skimming when windy days hit. I now set the robot to run every 2 days, then do a quick skim myself once a week. It’s been a game changer for staying ahead of debris. Do you also deal with extra skimming on windy days?

I vacuum once a week too, but like some of you, I’ve found that a quick daily skim and brushing the walls every few days helps keep the pool looking cleaner for longer. I’ve also started using the robot more often in the summer since it picks up everything faster. Anyone else tried a pool cover to cut down on debris?

Mine’s pretty similar to what a lot of people here are doing, and honestly it took a while to land on something that felt “manageable” instead of constant work.

Typical routine for me:
  • Vacuum once a week (manual or robot, depending on how lazy I’m feeling 😅)
  • Robot cleaner every 2–3 days during peak season
  • Quick skim most days, especially after windy nights
  • Brush walls/steps once or twice a week so stuff doesn’t stick and turn into algae
  • Skimmer baskets every couple of days so circulation stays strong
What made the biggest difference was realizing that debris building up fast doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong, it usually just means the pool’s environment is working against you (trees, wind, pollen, bugs, storms). Weekly vacuuming is totally normal, but it works best when it’s backed up by light, frequent stuff like skimming and brushing.

I also stopped trying to keep the pool perfect every day. The goal is “clean enough that nothing builds up,” not “zero debris at all times.” Once I accepted that, the routine felt way less frustrating.

If you’re already vacuuming weekly and skimming a bit, you’re on the right track. A robot just shifts the workload, it doesn’t eliminate debris entirely, but it does save time and effort.

i used to manually vacuum once a week like you and felt the same buildup, for me debris just moved faster than my schedule, so now i still spot-vacuum when needed but let a robotic cleaner from aquadoc run a couple times a week and it keeps things under control without me spending extra time.

I’m pretty close to what a lot of people here have landed on, and it took me a while to stop feeling like I was “behind” all the time.

My normal rhythm looks like this:
  • Vacuum: once a week. Sometimes manual, sometimes I let the robot do most of it and just touch up steps and corners.
  • Robot cleaner: every 2–3 days during peak season. More often if it’s windy or there’s pollen.
  • Skimming: quick pass most days, especially in the morning after wind or overnight debris. This honestly does more than people think.
  • Brushing: once or twice a week on walls, steps, and corners. It keeps stuff from sticking and turning into algae.
  • Baskets/filter: skimmer baskets every couple days, filter as needed when pressure creeps up.
What changed things for me was realizing that debris building up “too fast” usually isn’t a failure of your routine, it’s just your environment. Trees, pollen, wind, bugs, storms… weekly vacuuming is totally normal, but it works best when it’s supported by light, frequent stuff like skimming and brushing.

I also stopped aiming for “perfect every day.” If nothing is piling up, nothing’s sticking to the walls, and the water stays clear, the routine is working. Robots don’t eliminate cleaning, they just shift the workload so you’re not spending an hour every weekend.

If you’re already vacuuming weekly and noticing buildup, adding either more frequent skimming or running a robot a couple times a week usually fixes that without adding much effort.
