Is it bad if I rinse my pool filter too often?

I rinse my cartridge filter almost every week because it looks dirty fast. Someone told me cleaning it too much can actually make it wear out sooner. Is that true or is frequent rinsing a good thing?

Rinsing is fine but deep cleaning too often can shorten the filter’s life. Light dirt is normal and doesn’t always mean it needs cleaning.

If your pressure isn’t rising much you can probably wait longer between cleanings. I usually clean mine only when pressure goes up 8,10 psi.

Make sure you’re using gentle water pressure. High pressure spray can damage the pleats over time.

That makes sense. I’ll stop cleaning it on a schedule and start watching the pressure instead. Appreciate the advice.

In my opinion, a light rinse is fine, but deep cleaning too often, especially with a strong spray, can wear the pleats out faster. I do not clean on a weekly schedule, I go by pressure: once it is up about 8 to 10 psi from clean, then I clean it. And when I rinse it, I use gentle water pressure, not a power wash.

A light rinse is not a problem, so you are not “ruining” it just by spraying it off often. What usually wears a cartridge out faster is using too much force (like a pressure washer) or doing harsh deep cleans too frequently. I do not really follow a weekly schedule, I follow the pressure gauge: when the pressure rises noticeably from my “clean” number, that is when I rinse it. A cartridge can look dirty and still be filtering fine.
So my take is: rinsing is fine, just keep the spray gentle and let the pressure reading tell you when it actually needs cleaning.

From my experience, a light weekly rinse isn’t a problem as long as you’re just removing surface debris. What really shortens cartridge life is frequent deep cleaning with high pressure or strong chemicals. In my setup, I let the cartridge run until pressure rises about 20 percent above clean baseline before doing a thorough cleaning. A filter actually performs better with a slight dirt layer for fine filtration.
