My pool pump makes a humming sound but no water is moving

Turned it on today after a week and it just hums but no water is coming through the system. Checked the breaker and power is fine, just no flow. Anyone else dealt with this kind of issue before.

Mine did the same. It was just air stuck in the line. I filled the pump basket with water, primed it again and it started pulling fine.

Had the same ‘humming, no flow’ yesterday. Mine was a stuck impeller from a tiny leaf. Killed the power, popped the lid, cleared it, primed with water back to normal. So besides re-priming, give the impeller a quick check little debris can stall it.

I’ve run into the same thing before! Usually it’s either the pump just needs priming or something is stuck in the impeller. I’d first turn off the power, remove the pump lid, and check for leaves or debris. Then fill the basket with water and try priming it again. Most of the time that humming stops and the water starts flowing normally.

I’ve had the exact same issue. Usually when a pool pump hums but won’t move water, it’s either the pump has lost its prime or the impeller is blocked. Here’s what I do:
  1. Turn off power completely for safety.
  2. Check the pump basket and impeller for leaves, small debris, or anything lodged inside. Even a tiny leaf can stall it.
  3. Fill the pump basket with water and try to re-prime the pump. Some pumps have a priming port; others just need the lid on and a bit of manual water to start the flow.
  4. Restart the pump and watch the water. If it hums but still doesn’t flow, the impeller may need a more thorough cleaning.
Most of the time, just re-priming and clearing the impeller gets it back to normal. If it still hums after that, it could be a mechanical issue or the motor drawing power without turning, which may need professional attention.

I had this happen after my pump sat unused for about a week too, turned out the motor shaft had just seized up a bit from sitting still. If you’re comfortable doing it, try switching off the breaker, taking off the back cover, and giving the shaft a gentle spin with a screwdriver. Sometimes it just needs a little nudge to free up.

Also, check that your pool water level is high enough to cover the skimmer opening, if it’s dropped too low, the pump can suck air instead of water and just hum. After that, re-prime the pump by filling the basket with water before turning it back on.

If it still only hums after that, it might be a capacitor issue, but nine times out of ten it’s just air or a little stiffness from sitting idle.

I had that happen once, pump hummed but didn’t move any water. In my case, the start capacitor had gone bad. The motor had power but couldn’t spin. If you’ve already cleared debris and primed it, try checking the capacitor at the back of the motor (turn off power first). A swollen or burnt one needs replacing.

Also, make sure the motor shaft spins freely by hand, if it’s tight, the bearings or impeller could be jammed. Sometimes a little stiffness builds up after sitting unused. If it moves freely but still just hums after priming, it’s likely an electrical issue like the capacitor or motor winding. Replacing that part usually brings the pump right back to life.
