Pool Chemicals: What do you really need, and what’s overkill?

Hey everyone, I’ve been maintaining my pool for a few years now, and I feel like I’ve bought every chemical on the shelf at some point 😅. Between chlorine, stabilizer, shock, algaecide, clarifier, and all the balancers, I’m starting to wonder what’s actually essential for regular maintenance, and what’s just “nice to have” for occasional use Would love to hear how you all keep it simple. What’s your core chemical routine each week?

Great question. For me, the basics are chlorine, pH adjusters, and stabilizer that’s what I use weekly. I keep algaecide and clarifier on hand but only use them if something’s off. Shock maybe every couple of weeks or after heavy use. I think the key is testing regularly and only adding what the water actually needs, not what the packaging tells you to buy.

Honestly? I used to grab every chemical that had “pool” on the label too lol. Over time, I trimmed it way down. Now I just stick with chlorine, some stabiliser (since we get a lot of sun), and keep pH/alkalinity in range.

I only use shock maybe once every couple of weeks, or if we’ve had a ton of swimmers. Algaecide and clarifier, I’ve mostly stopped using them unless something weird pops up. The trick for me was testing more often, but adding less kinda flipped how I thought about it. A simple setup works just fine most weeks.

Feel this lol. I used to throw every chemical in, just trying to keep things perfect. Now I mostly stick to chlorine, stabiliser, and keep an eye on pH and alkalinity. I’ll use shock maybe once every couple of weeks, more if it’s been crazy hot or after a bunch of people swim.

Algaecide and clarifier are kinda “as needed” for me. I only reach for them if the water starts acting up. Once you figure out your pool’s pattern, you realise you don’t need half the stuff on the shelf.

I’ve started treating my pool like a little ecosystem. I give it a quick check, make sure it’s balanced, then leave it to do its thing. It’s like my own mini water garden now. Anyone else let their pool run its course a bit before stepping in for a full tune-up?

I treat my pool like a pet I check on it daily, make sure everything’s good, and occasionally spoil it with a little extra TLC. Anyone else give their pool a little ‘pet care’ every now and then?

It's easy to get overwhelmed with all the chemicals and products out there for pool maintenance. I would recommend focusing on the basics: chlorine, pH adjusters, alkalinity, and stabilizers. Chlorine is your primary sanitizer, but you want to balance the pH to ensure the chlorine works effectively. It’s also a good practice to regularly test and adjust the alkalinity levels. Shock treatments should be done after heavy use or once every few weeks to maintain proper sanitizer levels. By sticking to these core chemicals, you can avoid unnecessary purchases and simplify your maintenance routine.

I feel you 😅 I’ve definitely gone through the whole “aisle of pool chemicals” phase too. These days, I try to keep it simple. I stick to chlorine, a weekly non-chlorine shock (I use the AquaDoc one), and just check pH and alkalinity regularly. If those are in range, I don’t really mess with much else. Clarifier, algaecide, and stabilizer I use more as needed, like after a storm, heatwave, or if the water’s looking a little off. But they’re not part of my weekly routine anymore. Keeping it basic has honestly made things way easier.

Honestly, I felt like a mad scientist staring at all those bottles chlorine, stabilizer, shock, algaecide, clarifier… the list goes on! Now I stick to just chlorine, a pH up/down tweak, and an alkalinity boost once a month. If my water still looks crystal, I skip the rest. Saves time, money, and sanity!

I keep a little ‘pool recipe’ stuck on the inside of my shed door just the essentials and amounts for my pool size. Stops me from impulse-buying every shiny bottle at the store.

I totally get the feeling! I’ve definitely overdone it in the past with buying every possible chemical on the shelf. These days, I only keep the basics on hand chlorine, stabilizer, and sometimes algaecide if I see any signs of algae. I also make sure to test the water regularly, which saves me from buying unnecessary stuff. Has anyone tried using a more natural approach for maintaining their pool? I’ve been curious but haven’t made the jump yet.

Same here, I used to have half a shelf full of “must-have” pool products that I barely touched. Now I’ve simplified it to chlorine, a bit of stabilizer, and pH balance checks twice a week. I’ll shock it after a pool party or storm, but that’s about it. Ever since I cut back, my water’s been clearer and maintenance takes way less time. Funny how less really is more with pools!
