Pool keeps getting crap in it what else can I do?

Okay, so not sure if this is just how it is, but I feel like no matter what I do, there’s always stuff in my pool. Leaves, bugs, random bits of dirt or whatever, even after I clean them the day before.

I’ve got one of those mesh skimmers, and I run the pump like 8 hours a day, still feels like I’m out there scooping junk every morning. I’ve even trimmed a couple of trees back, but it didn’t make much difference.

Do I just need a better cover or maybe one of those nets people hang over the whole thing? kinda annoying when you just wanna swim and end up cleaning half the time.

Any ideas?

Totally feel you on this. I used to spend every morning skimming leaves and bugs no matter how much I cleaned the day before. I tried a leaf net cover and honestly, it made a huge difference, especially overnight when most of the junk falls in. I don’t leave it on all the time, just when we’re not swimming for a few days or overnight during windy weather. I also added a leaf canister to my suction line and a fine mesh skimmer sock to catch more of the little stuff before it clogs my pump. You’ll never keep everything out, but with the right gear and running your pump during the times when debris is falling most, you can cut your cleanup way down.

At this point, I’m starting to think my pool is just a magnet for debris. Maybe I should install a “Leave No Leaf Behind” policy. If trees want to drop stuff, they should at least help clean it up! Anyone else feel like their pool is a secret leaf party and they weren’t invited?

I started timing my pool clean-ups right after the neighbor mows their lawn turns out half the debris was coming from there, not the trees. Problem cut in half instantly.

Yeah, I’ve been dealing with that too! The pool is like a magnet for debris no matter what. I started timing my pool cleaning right after the neighbor mows their lawn, and I found out half of the stuff coming into my pool was from their yard, not the trees! It cut the cleanup time in half instantly. Maybe I just need to send them a bill for all the extra leaves, huh?

Ugh, I know that struggle, my pool used to be a daily battle with leaves, bugs, and all sorts of junk floating around. I started using a mesh leaf net whenever we weren’t swimming, especially at night or when it was windy, and it made a huge difference. I also put a skimmer sock in the basket and a little leaf canister on the vacuum line, those tiny specks don’t stand a chance. One thing I didn’t expect: some of the debris actually comes from neighbors’ yards or the street, so cleaning after the main “falling debris” times helps a ton. It won’t be perfect, but it cuts down the daily net-grabbing marathon drastically.

Honestly some of that is just normal, pools are basically giant debris magnets, but one thing that helped me a lot was focusing more on how the surface water moves instead of just skimming more.

For a long time I had the same routine as you, skim every morning and still end up with bugs and leaves again by afternoon. What I realized was my return jets were pointed kind of randomly, so debris would just sit on the surface instead of drifting toward the skimmer. I adjusted them so the surface water slowly rotates around the pool and pushes everything toward the skimmer opening.

Another thing I noticed was timing. A lot of debris falls overnight or early morning, so if the pump isn’t running then the stuff just floats around. I moved part of my pump schedule to early morning and the skimmer actually started grabbing a lot of that junk automatically. My filter pressure even climbs a couple psi during heavy debris weeks because it’s catching so much more.

You’ll never get it 100 percent perfect if there are trees or wind around, but getting the circulation dialed in made a bigger difference for me than just scooping things out every day. Sometimes it’s less about cleaning more and more about letting the pool do the work for you.
