Pool water looks cloudy and not sure what’s going on?

Hey everyone,

Noticed my pool’s been looking kinda cloudy the last few days. Chlorine levels seem fine when I test, and the filter’s running like usual. Not sure what’s causing it. I brushed the walls and vacuumed yesterday, but it still looks hazy.

Does this usually mean something’s off with the balance? Could it just be the filter not doing its job?

Open to any advice, just trying to clear it up before the weekend.

Cloudy water can definitely be frustrating, especially when your chlorine seems fine. In my experience, it’s often a balance issue even if the chlorine looks okay. I’d check your pH and total alkalinity next, because if those are out of range, your chlorine won’t work as well, and fine particles can stay suspended in the water. Also, when was the last time you cleaned or backwashed your filter? Sometimes the filter looks like it’s running, but it’s clogged and not catching the small stuff that makes your pool look hazy. A clarifier can also help bind tiny particles so the filter can grab them better. I'd give the filter a deep clean, double-check your water balance, and keep the pump running longer than usual until it clears up.

I’ve had a similar issue. It turned out the problem was with the filter being dirty or not working optimally. After checking and backwashing the filter, the water started to clear up. Also, check the pH and alkalinity levels, make sure they’re balanced, as it can affect the water quality too.

I’ve had this happen too, the water stayed cloudy even with perfect chlorine levels. It turned out the filter was dirty and couldn’t catch the fine particles. Try checking the filter, make sure it’s clean, do a backwash, and also ensure your pH and alkalinity are balanced.

Hey Jacob, I’ve seen that happen a few times. Cloudy water often isn’t about chlorine alone, it’s usually a combo of water balance and filtration. Even if chlorine looks fine, if pH or alkalinity are off, the sanitizer can’t do its job properly. Fine particles then float around and make the water hazy.

First step: double-check your pH and total alkalinity, then make sure your filter is really clean. Backwash or clean the cartridges if it’s been a while. Running the pump longer than usual helps too. If things are still cloudy, a clarifier can bind those tiny particles so your filter can catch them more effectively. Stick with it a couple of days and your water should clear up.

You should definitely check your pool filter, it’s probably dirty and needs a backwash. I’ve had the same thing happen; even if your chlorine is fine, if the filter is clogged or the pH is off, the water will stay hazy.

Cloudy with “good” chlorine is one of those things that makes you question your sanity. I had a stretch last summer where my numbers looked textbook but the water just didn’t have that sharp, glassy look.

A couple things I’d look at beyond just free chlorine. First, check combined chlorine if you can. If CC is creeping above 0.5 ppm, that can make the water look dull even when FC is in range. Second, what’s your pH actually sitting at, and has it drifted over the last few days? If pH climbs up into the high 7s, chlorine gets less effective and fine particles hang around longer. I’ve also seen low calcium cause a slightly cloudy look when the saturation index swings negative, especially after a refill.

On the equipment side, don’t just trust that the filter is “running.” Look at the pressure gauge. If it’s 5 to 8 psi over your clean starting pressure, it’s probably time to clean or backwash even if flow seems okay. When my cartridge filter got a little blinded with oils and pollen, the water never went green, just hazy. A deep clean fixed it within a day.

If everything checks out chemically and mechanically, sometimes it’s just a ton of ultra fine debris the filter needs help catching. In that case I’ll run the pump 24 hours straight and brush again to keep things suspended so the filter can actually grab it. Usually clears before the weekend if you stay on it. What’s your current filter pressure compared to your normal baseline?
