Pump just quit in the middle of summer

Of all times, the pump decided to stop working right when the temps are hitting 35+. I can hear it try to kick on but then it shuts off again. Water’s already starting to cloud. Super frustrating. Do I try fixing it myself or just call someone straight away?

That’s classic timing for a pump to die on you! From what you describe, it sounds like the motor might be overheating or the capacitor could have failed, both pretty common in hot weather. You can check simple things like making sure the strainer basket isn’t clogged and the power supply is solid, but beyond that, messing with the motor yourself can be risky. I’d call a qualified pool technician rather than trying to open the motor, especially with summer heat driving water demand. In the meantime, keep the pool shaded if you can and avoid swimming until the pump is running again, otherwise the water could turn green fast.

That “tries to start then shuts off” thing can also happen when the pump isn’t getting enough water and it’s tripping the thermal protection. I had it happen in the middle of July one year and thought the motor was toast, but it ended up being a simple flow issue.

In my case the skimmer basket was packed with debris and the water level had dropped just enough that the pump was pulling a bit of air. The motor would start, struggle for a few seconds, then shut itself down to avoid overheating. Once I cleaned the basket, topped up the water level, and primed the pump again it ran normally.

Also check the pump basket and see if the lid o-ring is sealing well. If air is getting pulled in there you’ll often hear the pump try to start but it won’t stay running. When my pump was doing this the filter pressure never even climbed because it couldn’t build proper flow.

If you look through the pump lid while it tries to run, do you see the basket filling solid with water or a bunch of air bubbles swirling around? That can give a pretty good clue what’s going on.
