Pump making loud humming but not moving water

Went out this morning and noticed my pump is just humming really loud but not actually pushing any water. I already checked the basket, nothing blocking it. Any idea if this is something simple or if my motor is shot?

Could be a seized impeller or bad capacitor. Try spinning the impeller by hand (with power OFF!) to see if it’s stuck. Capacitor is usually a cheap fix.

If it’s humming but no flow, don’t let it run like that too long it can burn out the motor quick. Sometimes a clogged impeller hides deeper inside, not just at the basket.

I had the same issue last year. Replaced the start capacitor for $20 and it worked like new. If you’re not handy, a pool tech can swap it in 15 mins.

I’d kill power first, then you try spinning the impeller by hand. If it turns freely, replace the start capacitor; if it’s stiff, clear the jam. Don’t let it hum long or you’ll burn the motor.

I’ve had my pump do that loud humming but no water movement. The impeller was stuck. I killed the power, spun the impeller by hand, and once it moved freely I replaced the capacitor. Pump ran like normal again.
