Pump ran dry for a few hours, how bad is that?

Came home last night and realized my pump had been running without water for a while. Skimmer basket was empty and the pump was making a pretty awful noise before I shut it off. I refilled everything and it seems to run now but I’m worried I may have damaged something. Anyone else make this mistake before?

Unfortunately yes. Running dry can damage the pump seal or bearings but if it’s running smoothly now that’s a good sign. I’d keep an ear out for grinding or squealing noises over the next few days.

Check around the pump for any small leaks once it’s running. When mine ran dry the seal didn’t fail immediately but it started dripping a week later. Catching it early saved me from bigger damage.

I’d also make sure it’s priming quickly now. If it struggles to pull water or takes longer than usual that could point to internal wear. If everything looks and sounds normal you probably dodged the worst of it.

That helps ease my mind a bit. I’ll keep a close watch on it and listen for any weird noises. Hopefully I caught it early enough. Thanks for the advice.
