Pump runs fine, but water flow randomly weakens during the day

My pump starts strong in the morning, but around noon the water pressure at the returns drops a lot, then later in the evening it’s back to normal. Not sure if this is electrical, plumbing, or something else. Anyone dealt with this?

Don’t overlook clogged skimmer baskets or partial blockage mine acted the same way until I cleared a wad of leaves.

I’ve had that exact on-and-off flow issue before, and it turned out to be a mix of a few things rather than one single cause. During the hottest part of the day, demand on the pump and filter system is at its peak, warmer water, heavier circulation, and sometimes even a bit of thermal expansion in the plumbing can make small weaknesses show up. In my case, a nearly full filter was restricting flow more noticeably in the middle of the day, then easing up once temps cooled down. Another time, it was the timer for my solar heating causing flow to drop only when it kicked in.

If you’ve already checked baskets, seals, and pump heat like others mentioned, you might want to:
  • Watch the pressure gauge on the filter at different times of day to see if it spikes when flow slows.
  • Check if anything like solar panels, water features, or automatic cleaners are running only midday.
  • See if debris is settling in the skimmer line and then clearing once flow slows and picks back up.
It’s worth ruling out each piece step by step, you’ll usually find it’s a small issue stacking up with timing, not a major failure.
