Pump runs fine but water pressure in jets is super weak

Pump motor sounds normal and basket is clean but when I turn the jets on the flow is weak and doesn’t push like it used to. I already checked the skimmer line for clogs. Any ideas before I call someone in?
 
I had the same problem last summer. For me it was a dirty filter even though it looked fine. Once I gave it a deep clean the pressure came back. Sometimes it’s also an air leak on the suction side so worth checking those seals.

I’ve run into this before. Even if the pump sounds fine and the basket is clean, weak jet pressure often comes down to the filter or a suction-side issue. A few things to check:
  • Deep clean the filter: Sometimes it looks clean on the surface but has trapped debris inside that restricts flow.
  • Check for air leaks: Inspect seals on the pump lid, hoses, and skimmer connections. Even a small air leak can lower jet pressure.
  • Valves and lines: Make sure none of the valves are partially closed and that there aren’t kinks or blockages in the return lines.
Once I did a thorough filter clean and tightened the pump lid, my jets were back to full power.
 
I had this exact problem last season. Even though the pump sounded fine and the basket looked clean, my jets were weak. I discovered that some fine debris had settled deep inside the filter, nothing obvious from the outside. After doing a proper backwash and giving the filter a thorough rinse, the pressure came back. Also, I noticed that one of the return valves wasn’t fully open, which was subtly restricting flow. Once I adjusted it, everything ran like new.

Also worth checking if your water level is a little low, mine dropped just below the skimmer line once and it caused weak flow until I topped it off.

After shutting off the power and opening the pump housing, I cleaned out the impeller and the pressure improved instantly.

Another thing to check is the return eyeballs on your jets. Mine had calcium scale partially clogging them, which cut down the flow more than I realized. A quick soak in a vinegar solution cleared them right up. If your filter and seals are already clean, those two spots are easy to miss but can make a big difference.
 
If the motor sounds normal and the basket is clean but flow is weak when the jets are on, I usually suspect return side restriction or a partially clogged impeller, so check the stuff people miss, look at filter pressure trends (higher often means the filter is still dirty, much lower can point to air or an impeller issue), confirm all return valves are fully open and no diverter is half closed, check each return eyeball for scale or debris, and if you have a heater, chlorinator, or SWG make sure a bypass isn’t set wrong, then try bypassing add on equipment one at a time if you can, and the best DIY step before calling someone is opening the pump wet end and cleaning the impeller because a small leaf, hair, or plastic can drop flow a lot even while the motor still sounds fine.

I relate to what Manikshaw ran into. From my experience, a filter can look clean on the outside but still be clogged internally, which slowly kills the pressure. Before you call someone in, I think you should double-check flow after a deep clean, because that’s often where the issue hides.
 
One other angle that hasn’t really been touched yet is checking what the pressure gauge is actually telling you relative to normal. A lot of people focus on clogs only, but the direction of the pressure change matters. When this happened to me, my jets were weak but the filter pressure was lower than my usual baseline, not higher. That ended up pointing away from a dirty filter and toward a flow restriction before the pump was fully loading.

In my case it was a partially stuck bypass inside the heater. Everything sounded normal, basket stayed full, but the bypass door wasn’t fully opening so a chunk of the flow was getting short-circuited. I wouldn’t have found it if I hadn’t temporarily bypassed the heater and watched the pressure jump back up and the jets come alive. Same thing can happen with inline chlorinators or check valves that don’t seat right.

Also worth popping the pressure gauge itself if it’s old. I chased a “low pressure” problem for days before realizing the gauge was lying and stuck. Once I replaced it, the numbers finally made sense. If you know what your normal clean-filter psi is and compare from there, it can save a lot of guessing. Anyone else ever find the issue ended up being downstream equipment instead of the filter?
