If the pump basket is staying full but you’re seeing a steady stream of tiny champagne bubbles at the returns, that’s usually a small suction side air leak, not a major one.
Since you already tightened the lid, here are a few less obvious spots that cause constant micro bubbles:
First, pump drain plugs. Those little winterizing plugs on the front or bottom of the pump housing can pull air without ever dripping water. If they don’t have Teflon tape or the o ring is flattened, they’ll introduce a steady stream of air.
Second, suction side unions. Even if they feel tight, the internal o ring can get flattened or slightly twisted. I’ve had one that looked perfect but was just loose enough to suck air under vacuum.
Third, skimmer behavior under load. Like someone mentioned, a bouncing or partially stuck weir can introduce fine air even when the basket looks full. Also make sure the water level is mid skimmer opening. If it’s barely at the bottom edge, it can pull a subtle vortex.
Here’s a quick diagnostic trick: watch your filter pressure. If it’s 2 to 4 psi lower than your normal clean baseline and you see fine bubbles at the returns, that strongly suggests air getting in before the pump. A properly sealed system usually runs with solid return flow and boring, bubble free water after startup purge.
If it’s only tiny bubbles and everything else is stable, it’s not an emergency. But I’d track it down because over time air reduces efficiency and can stress the pump seal.
