Could you explain how to set and lower a safe stabilizer (CYA) level for a home hot tub because I’m struggling to read my test strips and I need practical step-by-step help?
I used to struggle with strips too. Easy rule: for a chlorine hot tub, keep CYA 20–40 ppm (I aim ~30). If yours is high, the only fix is dilution drain/replace 1/3–1/2 of the water, run the pump, then retest. If it’s low, pre-dissolve a little stabilizer (CYA) in a bucket, add slowly, circulate ~30 minutes, and test again tomorrow. Note: using dichlor adds CYA, so don’t overdo it.
I’ve been confused by strips too. In a chlorine hot tub, keep stabilizer (CYA) on the low side; if it’s high, the fix is a partial drain/refill, run the pump, then retest. If it’s low, pre-dissolve a little CYA in a bucket, add slowly, circulate, and check again tomorrow. Note: using dichlor also adds CYA, so go easy
Same here strips can be finicky. In a chlorine spa I keep CYA on the low side (30). If it’s high, the real fix is a partial drain/refill, run the pump, then retest. If it’s low, pre-dissolve a little stabilizer in a bucket, add slowly, circulate, and check again tomorrow. Note: dichlor adds CYA.
Thanks so much, Harper, Ella, and Michael this is super helpful. I’ll keep CYA on the low side (30), pre-dissolve a small amount in a bucket, add slowly, circulate, then re-test tomorrow. If it runs high, I’ll do a partial drain/refill. Great reminder that dichlor adds CYA I’ll go easy on it. Appreciate you all!
I usually keep my CYA on the low side around 30. If it happens to be high, I just drain a bit and refill. If it’s low, I pre-dissolve a little stabilizer and add it slowly. That routine’s always worked fine for me.
