Skimmer suction is weak

My skimmer has barely any suction lately. I checked for clogs, but it’s still slow. What else should I look for?

If you've already checked for clogs in the skimmer basket and the line, the next things to check are your pump basket and filter. A clogged or dirty pump basket can seriously reduce suction, and a dirty filter whether it’s cartridge, sand, or DE—can also slow things down. Try giving your filter a good cleaning or backwash if needed.

Also, double-check the water level in your pool. If it’s too low, the skimmer can suck in air, which reduces flow. Another thing to look at is the pump lid and O-ring if there's an air leak there, it can cause the pump to lose prime and weaken suction. A little air bubble in the pump basket is normal, but lots of air or gurgling sounds usually point to a leak somewhere on the suction side.

In addition to checking the filter and pump basket, it’s important to inspect the suction lines for any obstructions or air leaks that might be reducing suction. A small crack or loose fitting in the suction line can cause air to enter, which disrupts the vacuum effect and reduces efficiency. Also, make sure that your pump is running at the proper speed and that there’s no debris obstructing the impeller. If you’ve ruled out the common causes, checking for a possible air leak in the system might help identify the issue.

I had the same issue a while back; it wasn’t a clog, but my filter was really dirty and slowing everything down. After a good clean and backwash, the suction improved a lot. Also, double-check the water level and make sure the pump lid is sealed tight. Even a small air leak can mess with suction. If all else looks good, it might be worth checking for a leak in the suction line.

I noticed my pool skimmer isn’t sucking properly lately. I’ve checked the skimmer basket and line, but it’s still weak. What should I check next?
Turns out, I should check a few other things. First, make sure there are no leaks in the skimmer line or pump. Even small leaks can reduce suction. I also checked the water level, and if it’s too low, the skimmer can’t suck properly. After cleaning the filter and pump, the suction was back to normal

I ran into something similar last season, and it wasn’t the usual clog or dirty filter. In my case, the skimmer weir (that little flap at the front of the skimmer) was sticking halfway shut. It cut down the water flow enough that suction felt weak. A quick clean and making sure it swung freely fixed it.

Another thing I learned is that if the impeller inside the pump has even a small build-up of leaves or hair, it can slow down suction without being obvious. It’s worth opening the pump and giving the impeller a check just in case.

Sometimes the issue isn’t a big leak or a full clog—it’s a small part not moving right or a bit of debris in the pump.

I had weak skimmer suction once too and thought it was a clog, but turned out to be something else. The impeller inside the pump had a bit of junk stuck in it. Nothing major, just a few strands of leaves and hair, but it slowed the flow way down. Once I pulled the pump apart and cleaned it out, the suction felt normal again.

Another thing worth checking is for tiny air leaks on the suction side. Doesn’t always show as big bubbles in the pump basket either sometimes it’s just a small hiss from a loose fitting or lid O-ring not sealing tight. That little bit of air is enough to make the skimmer act weak.

Basically, if your basket and filter are clear, I’d have a look at the impeller and make sure your fittings are sealed up. Those are easy to miss but can cause exactly the problem you’re describing.

I’ve had the same issue before. At first, I thought it was just a clog, but after cleaning the basket and filter, the suction was still weak. Check the water level in the pool too, sometimes if it’s too low, the skimmer can’t suck properly. Also, make sure the pump lid is tightly sealed because even a small air leak can mess with suction. If you’ve checked all that and it’s still an issue, there might be a leak in the suction line that needs further inspection.

I’ve had a similar issue! Turns out, a slightly dirty filter and some blockages in the pipes can weaken the suction. After cleaning and adjusting the pH, the suction power was back to normal. Also, check if there’s any air leak at the pipe connections.
