What backyard party games are a hit with adults?

Planning a pool party soon and I’ve got the kids’ stuff covered but looking for fun ideas to keep the adults entertained too. We’ve done cornhole and giant Jenga before but curious what else people enjoy. Any favorites that work well outdoors and don’t require a ton of setup?

Hey Ryan, sounds like a fun time! We’ve done a bunch of these backyard hangs, and a few games always get people into it.

Ladder toss has been a big hit at ours. easy to set up and people get competitive fast lol. also had a lot of fun doing a DIY trivia game once and just split everyone into teams and did random questions, drinks involved haha. Simple, but it kept folks laughing.

If your group’s into it, water balloon toss or even an adult version of musical chairs with pool floats can get pretty wild. also seen people do a “flip cup tournament” outside, messy but fun.

The point is, it doesn’t have to be fancy. Stuff that gets people moving or laughing usually wins.

While games like trivia or water balloon toss are great for getting people active and engaged, it’s also important to consider the comfort and safety of your guests. If you're having a larger group, you might want to think about creating designated areas for both active games and relaxation to keep things balanced. For adults, something like a friendly, non-competitive pool volleyball game or a "poolside cocktail-making" contest could also be fun while staying low-maintenance. Additionally, having enough seating or shaded areas for guests to relax will ensure that people can enjoy themselves even in between games.

Hey Ryan,
We’ve had a lot of fun with simple stuff like ring toss or backyard pong (just some buckets and tennis balls). We also did a goofy team relay once with hula hoops and crab walks—ended up being everyone’s favorite part of the night.
Honestly, anything that gets people laughing or moving a bit usually goes over great!

planning a backyard party for adults, there are some really fun and easy games to try. Stuff like cornhole, bocce ball, ladder toss, or giant Jenga are always a hit. Drinking games like flip cup or beer pong can bring the energy up too. For more chill vibes, games like “Never Have I Ever” or “Who’s Most Likely To” are great for laughs and getting people talking. If your group’s up for something active, sack races, tug of war, or a DIY obstacle course can be a blast. A simple scavenger hunt with prizes works well too. Super easy to set up and keeps everyone entertained!

Honestly, some of the best ones I’ve seen are the super low-effort ones. We once did a “guess the drink” blind taste test with sodas and a few mixed cocktails, turned into way more laughs than expected because people were so confident and then got it totally wrong.

Another time we just laid out some cards and ended up with an hours-long poker game under the patio lights. Didn’t plan it, but it kept everyone hanging around and chatting.

If you want to keep it light, even something like a frisbee accuracy throw (set up a couple buckets or hoops) can get a little competitive without needing tons of gear. It’s really the silly, easy stuff that people seem to remember.

Sounds fun! I’ve tried doing a super simple trivia game, no equipment needed, just split everyone into teams. It got everyone laughing and having a good time. Sometimes, you don’t need fancy games, just something that gets everyone involved and laughing!

Reading what Megan Lawson shared, I’m totally with that approach. From what I’ve seen, adult pool parties work best when the games are light and keep people talking instead of locking everyone into something competitive. You want movement, laughs, and easy mixing, not complicated setups. The simplest ideas usually end up being the most fun.

One thing that’s worked surprisingly well for us is games people can drift in and out of without feeling locked in. Stuff like bocce ball or kubb ends up being perfect because someone can play a round, grab a drink, jump in the pool, then come back without killing the flow of the game.

We also did a really casual poolside guessing game once where everyone wrote down a random fact about themselves and someone read them out loud. No setup, no teams, but it got people laughing and talking way more than any structured game. For adults, it seems like anything that sparks conversation and a little friendly trash talk beats anything that feels like a tournament. If people don’t feel pressured to “play,” they actually end up playing more.

We’ve found the biggest hits are the ones that don’t feel like “organized fun” but somehow turn competitive anyway.

One that always surprises people is poolside dice games. Just a couple big foam dice and simple rules like highest roll picks the next song or assigns a silly mini challenge. Super low setup and people drift in and out without pressure.

Another easy win is a floating beer pong setup in the pool. Not the intense college version, just relaxed teams, music going, people subbing in and out. It keeps a core group engaged while others hang nearby and trash talk.

If you want something dry-land but different from cornhole, bocce ball or kubb works great because it’s social and doesn’t require constant attention. We also did a “best cannonball” contest once with scorecards, half serious, half ridiculous categories. That one got way louder than expected.

Honestly the formula that works for adults is:
– Easy to join
– Easy to leave
– A little competitive
– A lot of laughing

The more complicated the rules, the faster people wander back to their drinks. What kind of crowd is it, chill hangout vibe or rowdy competitive crew.

We had a similar setup last summer and honestly the games that worked best were the ones people could jump into for a few minutes without committing to a full tournament. Once drinks and the pool are involved, attention spans get pretty short.

One thing that unexpectedly became the highlight was a simple floating basketball hoop in the pool. Nothing fancy, just people taking shots from the deck or from floats. It turned into this casual shooting contest all evening. People kept trying trick shots, and suddenly you had half the group watching and cheering.

Another one that got a lot of laughs was a “worst dive” or “most ridiculous pool entry” contest. Not even about skill. People were doing belly flop attempts, slow motion entries, goofy spins off the step. We had a couple people acting as judges and giving completely ridiculous scores. Took zero setup and everyone got involved.

Also if you have space in the yard, bocce works really well because it’s slow paced and social. People play a round, grab a drink, wander back to the pool, then come back later. Those kinds of games seem to keep the vibe relaxed instead of turning the party into a full competition.
