What type of filter do you prefer?

I personally prefer a cartridge filter for ease of use. It gives really good filtration without needing to backwash, which saves water. I rinse mine every few weeks and deep clean it a couple of times a season. It’s great for medium to small pools, and it keeps my water clear with less hassle. Only downside is replacing the cartridges every few years, but for me, the convenience is worth it.

I went with a DE filter because it traps the smallest particles, leaving the water sparkling clear. It does take more maintenance backwashing and recharging with DE powder but nothing beats the water quality. If you want the clearest water and don’t mind the extra work, DE is great. Sand filters are super easy to maintain but don’t filter as finely. It really depends on whether you want convenience, top-notch clarity, or something in between.

I use a sand filter and it’s been easy to take care of. Just need to backwash it sometimes. It doesn’t catch every tiny thing, but it keeps my pool clean enough. Good if you want something simple.

For me I ended up choosing a sand filter after weighing convenience against performance. It’s super low-maintenance, and the backwashing is quick and straightforward.

My water isn’t perfectly crystal-clear like with DE, but for everyday swimming and keeping things simple, it works really well. I also like that it’s durable, and I don’t have to replace media often.

If you’re after minimal fuss and reliability over ultra-fine filtration, sand is hard to beat.

also ended up going with a sand filter, because it's more practical and hassle-free. If your pool’s not too big, a sand filter works just fine to keep the water clean. Doesn’t need backwashing too often either.

I’ve gone back and forth on this over the years, and honestly my preference landed on cartridge after trying all three.

Sand is great if you want something tough and low-effort, but I always felt like I was trading clarity for convenience. DE gives amazing water, but the extra steps (powder, tear-down cleanings) started to feel like homework after a while.

Cartridge has been the best balance for me. The water stays noticeably clear, there’s no backwashing or water waste, and cleaning is basically just pulling it out and hosing it off when the pressure creeps up. Yeah, you replace cartridges every few years, but it’s a pretty painless swap.

If I had to simplify it:
  • Least thinking → sand
  • Best water → DE
  • Best overall balance → cartridge
If you don’t mind a little hands-on cleaning but want good clarity without the DE hassle, cartridge is hard to beat.

If you are choosing between sand, DE, or cartridge, I usually put it like this: cartridge is the easiest day to day because you do not backwash and maintenance is simple, you just rinse it sometimes and replace the element every few years. DE gives the clearest water, but you have to be okay with more upkeep (backwashing and recharging). Sand is the most durable and straightforward, backwashing is quick, but it does not filter as fine as DE. So it comes down to your priority: most convenient (cartridge), clearest water (DE), or simplest and reliable (sand).

I usually answer this question by thinking about where the pool lives, not just the pool itself. When I moved from a dusty area to a neighborhood with tons of trees and pollen, my opinion changed pretty fast.

With heavy pollen and fine dust, DE was awesome for how the water looked, but it also meant I was cleaning grids more often than I wanted. It felt great right after service, then annoying a few weeks later. Sand didn’t care nearly as much about that kind of debris, it just kept chugging along, but the water never looked quite as polished unless everything else was dialed in perfectly.

Cartridge ended up being my sweet spot mainly because of local water rules. Backwashing restrictions made sand and DE less appealing, and not having to dump water every time pressure rose was a big win. I also noticed cartridge filters behave way better if you run the pump longer at lower speed, pressure stays stable and cleanings spread out more.

So my preference isn’t tied to one filter being “best,” it’s more about surroundings and habits. Trees, dust, water restrictions, and how often you actually want to touch the equipment all matter more than the label on the filter tank. If you match the filter to those realities, any of the three can feel easy.

I used to think this was just a “pick one and be done” decision, but after living with different setups, my preference kind of shifted based on how much attention I actually wanted to give the pool.

Right now I lean sand, not because it’s the best on paper, but because it’s the least demanding mentally. I don’t have to think about it much. Pressure creeps up, I backwash, done. During busy weeks or when life gets in the way, it’s forgiving. Water stays swim-ready even if it’s not showroom perfect.

That said, when I had more time and cared more about that polished look, cartridge was really appealing. Clearer water and no backwash mess, but you do have to be okay with pulling it out and rinsing it when pressure rises. DE gave the nicest water I’ve ever had, but it also asked the most of me, and eventually I realized I didn’t enjoy the extra steps.

So my “preference” ended up being less about filtration quality and more about how much effort I realistically want to put in week after week. If I wanted the cleanest look, I’d pick DE. If I wanted a good balance, cartridge. If I want to barely think about the filter at all, sand wins for me.
