Oh man, last summer our filter cracked the night before a big family party. Woke up to cloudy, milky water and no way to clear it fast enough. Ended up draining half the pool and refilling just to get it somewhat swimmable. Spent the whole party apologizing and explaining why the water looked like bad lemonade. Learned my lesson always check your equipment a few days ahead of time.

I’ve had something like that happen before a family get-together too. The water went cloudy out of nowhere and I freaked out. Ever since then, I always check the pool equipment a few days before any event so it doesn’t happen again.

Mine was a mid-summer pump failure that I didn’t catch right away. I was traveling for a long weekend and the pump apparently stopped sometime on day one. By the time I got back the water had gone from perfectly clear to that swampy green color and the surface had a layer of bugs and pollen stuck to it. Not a great welcome home.
What made it worse was the heat. With no circulation and temps in the mid 30s, everything accelerated fast. The filter pressure was obviously zero since the system wasn’t running, and when I finally got the pump working again the pressure jumped almost 8 psi within a few hours because the filter was catching so much dead algae and debris.
The cleanup took a couple days of brushing and nonstop filtering before the water started looking normal again. What surprised me was how quickly things fell apart once circulation stopped. Ever since then I glance at the pump every day just to make sure it’s actually running. Pools behave great when water is moving, but once that stops it goes downhill pretty fast. Anyone else come back from vacation to a swamp?
