What’s your favorite summer activity besides swimming?

We all love spending time in the pool, but what’s your favorite thing to do in the summer when you’re not swimming? Looking for some fun ideas to enjoy the season.

For me, it’s backyard grilling with friends and family. There’s nothing better than firing up the BBQ, playing some music, and relaxing with good food after a swim. I also like setting up lawn games like cornhole and spikeball to keep things fun.

I like to pretend I’m a food critic and turn my grill into a little BBQ competition. I’ll try to come up with random ‘themes’ for the meal, like ‘burgers with a twist’ or ‘summer seafood showdown.’ It’s pretty ridiculous, but makes grilling way more fun. Anyone else get a little competitive with their backyard cookouts?

That sounds perfect. I’ve been meaning to try spikeball but haven’t yet. Might be time to finally grab a set and give it a go.

my summer “competition” is trying to figure out how many ice cream cones I can eat in one sitting before it’s too embarrassing. Sometimes, I think I should set up a scoreboard: “1 cone for normal speed, 2 cones for the fastest, and 5 for the ultimate champion.”

For me, it’s evening bike rides when the sun’s starting to go down. The air cools off just enough, and it’s such a relaxing way to end the day after being out in the heat. Sometimes we’ll stop for ice cream along the way, which makes it even better. It’s a simple thing, but it really makes summer feel special.

I’m a big fan of outdoor movie nights in the summer. We hang up a sheet in the backyard, set up a little projector, and let everyone bring their own snacks. Sitting under the stars with a cold drink and a good film feels way different than being inside. It’s kind of become a tradition with neighbors and friends, and the kids love it just as much as the adults.

Honestly, when I’m not swimming, I love just chilling in the backyard with some music and snacks. A little picnic setup, a few lawn games, or even a small fire pit for evening chats makes summer feel way more relaxed.

For me, it’s all about those lazy weekend mornings on the patio. I’ll make a coffee, throw on some music, and just sit outside before the heat really kicks in. Sometimes I’ll mess around with a little gardening or just read a book. Nothing fancy, but it’s honestly my favorite part of summer, slow, quiet, and no screens for a bit.

Honestly, my favorite summer activity isn’t really an activity at all. It’s the slow backyard hours when nothing is scheduled. Late afternoon or early evening, sun dropping, drink in hand, just sitting outside and letting the day wind down. No rushing back into the pool, no agenda.

I’ll usually throw on low music, mess around on the grill, or just sit and watch the water. That sounds boring, but it’s the part of summer that actually sticks with me. After a busy weekend with people over, those quiet nights feel earned. Sometimes I’ll read, sometimes I’ll just stare at the pool like it’s a screensaver.

One thing I didn’t expect is how much clearer water affects that vibe. If the pool looks cloudy or stressed, it bugs me even if I’m not swimming.

So yeah, grilling, music, quiet evenings, and doing as little as possible outside. Summer feels best when it’s not overplanned. Anyone else find the “doing nothing” moments end up being the highlight?

I’m big on early morning backyard time. Before it gets loud, before the heat really kicks in. Coffee, bare feet on the patio, and just kind of easing into the day. Sometimes I’ll toss a towel down and do a quick stretch session or light workout outside. Way better than being stuck in a gym when the weather’s actually nice.

Evening walks around the neighborhood are another one for me. There’s something about summer air right around sunset that just hits different. You see everyone out, kids riding bikes, people grilling, that low hum of activity. It feels seasonal in a way winter just doesn’t.

And I’m with you on the pool being part of the backdrop even when you’re not in it. When it’s calm and clear, the whole yard feels settled. When it’s not, it weirdly throws off the mood. Funny how water can set the tone even if you’re just sitting nearby doing absolutely nothing.

Summer’s best moments usually aren’t the big planned ones. It’s the quiet pockets in between.
