What’s your first step when opening the pool?

Is it better to clear debris off the cover first or start with the water and pump checks before anything else?

Honestly, I just toss the chlorine in once the sun's down. tried doing it in the middle of the day a few times, but it never seemed to hold. Probably because of the sun burning it off or something, especially on those hot days.

Other stuff like pH balancer or algaecide, I’ll add whenever I get to it, but for chlorine or shock, evening always worked better for me. Water stays clearer longer, and I don’t feel like I’m wasting it. Not saying it’s the only way, just what’s worked in my case.

I always clear the debris off the cover first. If you skip that step, all the leaves and dirt will end up in your water when you pull the cover off. Once the cover is clean and removed, I check the pump, filter, and plumbing to make sure everything is tight and ready before starting the system. After that, I top off the water level and start circulating the water before adding any chemicals.

Definitely clean the cover first. I use a leaf blower and a pool brush to sweep everything off before taking it off. Then I reconnect the pump and filter, check for leaks, and make sure all the drain plugs are sealed. Once water is circulating smoothly, I skim out anything that fell in and then test and balance the water. Getting the cover cleaned first saves you a lot of work later.

I’ve tried it both ways, and I’m definitely in the ‘clear debris first’ camp. If you leave stuff on the cover, it just falls in once you open it. But before I remove the cover, I’ll often run the pump for a few minutes to get the water moving and check the circulation. It just helps with the whole process, so you’re not stirring everything up once the cover comes off! It’s an extra step, but I find it makes the whole opening go smoother!

I usually just clear the cover first so I can pretend to be a responsible pool owner for 5 minutes. 😅 After that, I spend the next hour convincing myself I’ll remember everything before I start adding chemicals. Anyone else do a little dance around the pool before getting to the “real” work?

Wow, everyone has such good systems in place! I’ve started making a checklist before opening so I don’t forget any steps. I also like to use a garden sprayer to rinse the cover off first to avoid getting debris everywhere once I take it off. Anyone else use a sprayer for a smoother start?

I’ve tried both ways too, but I always go with cleaning the debris off first. If I leave stuff on the cover, it just falls right into the water when I open it. After removing the cover, I usually run the pump for a bit to get things moving, then check the circulation. It helps everything go smoother! Anyone else start by cleaning the cover before anything else?

Haha, my first pool opening felt like a mini adventure. I grabbed the leaf blower and started clearing the cover, but of course a rogue branch fell in the water anyway 😅. Once the cover was off, I ran around checking the pump and filter, pretending I was on a mission. By the time I actually tested the water, I felt like I’d already earned a medal just for surviving the chaos. Anyone else get caught up in the “pool opening drama”?
