What's your pool vacuum routine like?

I vacuum once a week but somehow still end up with random debris, am I doing it wrong?
Nope, totally normal. I vacuum once a week too, but leaves and dirt still blow in between cleanings especially if it’s windy. I just do a quick skim with the net in the mornings and let the filter/skimmer catch the rest. The pool’s outside, so you’ll never get it 100% perfect.

Same here. Even right after vacuuming, I’ll find stuff the next day. Between wind, bugs, and trees, it’s just part of pool life. You’re probably not doing anything wrong maybe just add some skimming during the week to keep on top of it.

Happens to me all the time, especially in the corners where circulation isn’t great. I vacuum once a week but still find little twigs and bugs floating around. I’ve just learned to accept that outdoor pools collect stuff daily no matter what you do 😂.

I’ve been there! 😅 It’s like the pool has a mind of its own sometimes. I find that using a leaf blower on the surface before I vacuum helps a lot blows off the bigger stuff before the vacuum gets to work. I also use a fine-mesh net after a windy day to catch smaller debris. Keeps everything pretty clean between vacuum days. Anyone else have any tricks for keeping things cleaner, especially after a windy day?

I totally feel your pain my pool fooled me for weeks, too! One thing that really helped was tossing in a tiny dose of pool flocculant an hour before vacuuming. It clumps those trickle-through particles so the vacuum actually grabs them instead of circling around. Hope that saves you from surprise twig showers!

One thing I started doing this year is checking the vacuum head itself. I realized mine wasn’t sitting flat on the floor because the wheels were a bit off. Swapped it out and suddenly I was picking up way more of the fine stuff. Also added a sock over the skimmer basket which catches small bits the filter misses. It’s not perfect, but between that and a mid-week quick skim, the water’s been a lot cleaner.

I used to think weekly vacuuming was enough too, but what made a big difference for me was mixing up the pattern each time. Instead of always going back and forth in straight lines, I’ll sometimes go diagonally or in a spiral. Sounds silly, but it actually helps catch the fine stuff that gets left behind in little “tracks.”

Another small change that helped is running the pump for an hour before vacuuming. It stirs up the settled debris so the vacuum can grab it instead of missing particles stuck in dead spots. Since I started doing that, my pool looks cleaner for longer between sessions.

Same here my vacuum's doing fine, but I always find a leaf or two hiding in the corners after. I blame it on the wind my pool is pretty much a tree magnet. I’ve started quick skimming on windy days to keep things under control. What’s your secret for minimizing it?

Same here, no matter how often I vacuum, I always find a little debris floating around! I’ve just learned to embrace it as part of having an outdoor pool. I usually try to skim a little more during the week, especially after windy days. Anyone else get surprised by how much stuff blows in after a storm?

I’m in the same boat, no matter how much I vacuum, there’s always something new the next day. What’s helped me a lot is brushing the walls and steps right before vacuuming so all the fine stuff doesn’t get stuck in corners. I also throw a skimmer sock on to catch the smaller particles my filter misses. It doesn’t make the pool spotless forever, but it definitely cuts down on the random debris showing up between cleanings.

I’m right there with you, weekly vacuuming feels like it should be enough, but the pool still finds ways to collect little surprises. What made a difference for me was combining a few habits instead of just relying on the vacuum. I’ll brush before vacuuming, skim a couple of times during the week, and every so often toss in a flocculant when I notice the water looking a bit cloudy. It’s still not “perfect,” but it definitely stays cleaner longer. Honestly, I think a bit of daily debris is just the price of an outdoor pool.

I usually stick to once-a-week vacuuming too, but what’s helped me cut down on random bits showing up is running the pump for a little while before I start. It stirs up the fine stuff that would otherwise hide in corners, so the vacuum actually picks it up.

I also keep a leaf rake handy and do a quick skim every couple of days, especially after windy weather. Doesn’t keep the pool spotless forever, but it keeps me from feeling like I’m vacuuming for nothing.

You’re not doing anything wrong at all, what you’re describing is pretty much normal outdoor pool behavior.

My routine looks like this:
  • Vacuum once a week (sometimes twice if it’s windy or after storms)
  • Brush right before vacuuming so the fine stuff in corners and dead spots gets lifted
  • Quick skims during the week, especially after windy days
  • Pump runs 30–60 minutes before vacuuming to stir things up
The big thing I learned is that vacuuming alone doesn’t stop debris from appearing, it only removes what’s settled at that moment. Leaves, bugs, dust, and pollen are constantly blowing in, and fine particles like to hide in corners, steps, and low-circulation areas. That’s why you’ll still see random bits the next day even after a perfect vacuum.

A few small tweaks that helped reduce the “why is this back already?” feeling:
  • Brush before, not after vacuuming
  • Change your vacuum pattern occasionally (diagonal or spiral instead of straight lines)
  • Use a skimmer sock to catch fine debris the filter misses
  • Accept that outdoor pools are never 100% debris-free for a full week 😄
Weekly vacuuming + light midweek skimming is a solid routine. If the water’s clear and chemistry is good, you’re doing just fine, the pool isn’t undoing your work, it’s just being an outdoor pool.

you’re probably not doing it wrong, weekly vacuuming is fine but debris can build up fast from wind and oils so for me the fix was letting circulation do more work by brushing more often and adding a weekly enzyme treatment like aquadoc weekly enzyme so the small stuff doesn’t settle and turn into visible mess.
