When should I shock my hot tub?

I’ve been maintaining my spa pretty consistently but I’m never totally sure when I should be shocking it. Some people say weekly others say only after heavy use or if the water looks cloudy. How do you know the right time to shock a hot tub and is there such a thing as doing it too often?

I follow a simple rule shock when sanitizer demand feels high. If your chlorine or bromine levels keep dropping fast it’s time. Also always shock after adding fresh water to burn off any leftover organics or start clean.

You can’t really over-shock if you’re using the right dose but doing it too often wastes product. I use AquaDoc non-chlorine shock every week and chlorine shock once a month for a deeper clean. That balance keeps things clear without irritating the skin.

Most people shock once a week as part of regular maintenance. But the real answer depends on how often you use it. If the water starts smelling funky or looks dull that’s your sign. After parties or multiple users I always shock right away.

That helps a lot. I’ve been guessing up until now but weekly with extra after heavy use sounds like a solid plan. I’ll add it to my routine and see if it keeps the water clearer. Thanks for the advice.

I usually shock just once a week, and add an extra one if the tub gets heavy use. If the water starts smelling weird or looks dull, that’s my sign to shock it right away.
