Why do tiny bugs keep floating on my pool even after skimming?

I skim my pool every morning but by afternoon there are tiny bugs floating on the surface again. It doesn’t look dirty but it’s annoying and never seems to fully stop. Is this a circulation problem or just normal?

This usually happens when the surface water isn’t moving enough. Bugs land and don’t get pulled toward the skimmer.

Try adjusting your return jets so they push water toward the skimmer. That helped a lot with surface debris in my pool.

Some bugs are just attracted to water especially in warm weather. A surface skimmer sock can help catch them before they spread out.

This is pretty normal, especially in warm weather, but it gets worse when the surface flow isn’t pulling toward the skimmer. I’d aim your return jets so the surface “circulates” toward the skimmer, and if needed use a skimmer sock so the tiny bugs get caught before they spread out.

One small thing I noticed with this is that bugs tend to collect more when the surface tension of the water gets a little “sticky.” The pool can still look perfectly clean, but oils from sunscreen, pollen, or even a heavier bather load can leave a really thin film on the surface. When that happens, tiny insects land and just sit there instead of drifting toward the skimmer.

I figured this out because my skimmer was working fine and my return jets were already aimed toward it, but bugs would still hang around for hours. My filter pressure was normal and circulation was good, so it didn’t make sense at first. After a busy weekend with a lot of swimmers the problem got noticeably worse.

What helped in my case was brushing the waterline and running the pump longer during the warmest part of the afternoon when bugs are most active. Once the surface started moving a bit more consistently the skimmer began grabbing them way faster. Some days though, especially when it’s really calm and warm, they just keep showing up no matter what you do. Pools seem to attract them like magnets. Anyone else notice they get worse on really still days?
