Why does chlorine disappear right after shocking

I shocked heavy last night and by this morning the strip shows almost no chlorine at all is that normal or am I missing something in my water balance.
 
That happened to me when I had a lot of organic stuff in the water the shock burns through it quick so the level looks gone by morning you may need to double shock if it’s really dirty.
 
Check your stabilizer too if CYA is too low the sun eats chlorine fast I added conditioner to mine and it finally held for more than a day.
 
I ran into this once and it turned out my pH was drifting too high. When the pH isn’t in the right range, chlorine becomes way less effective and seems to vanish overnight. If you slammed shock last night and a strip shows near zero by morning, it can be normal if you have a big chlorine demand eating it up (early algae, lots of organics, ammonia), or the strip is just maxed out and reads wrong when FC was very high, so I usually retest with a more accurate method, check CC too, then run an overnight chlorine loss test, if FC truly drops hard with no sun then something is consuming it and you’ll need to hold FC higher until the loss settles, and also confirm your CYA isn’t way off because that affects chlorine stability.

i’ve seen this happen and it’s usually normal when there’s a lot of chlorine demand, a heavy shock can get used up fast by organics or hidden buildup even if the water looked fine, what helped me was addressing that demand with aquadoc natural spa enzyme from mavaquadoc and then shocking again, after that the chlorine actually held instead of disappearing overnight.

I’ll add one thing that doesn’t get talked about enough, temperature and circulation overnight.

Last August I shocked hard after a nasty storm. Water looked fine, nothing green, so I expected chlorine to still be high in the morning. It wasn’t. Basically zero on my drop test. What I noticed though was my pump schedule had it shutting off at 2am, and the water temp was still in the mid 80s. Warm water plus a bunch of fine debris equals serious chlorine demand.

When chlorine is high, it oxidizes aggressively. If there’s hidden organics in the water or even sitting in the filter, it will chew through that dose fast. I’ve also seen this when my TA was high and pH drifted up around 7.8 to 8.0, chlorine becomes less effective up there, so you burn through more of it to get the same sanitizing power. That makes it look like it “vanished.”

What changed things for me was:

• Make sure pH is in the mid 7s before shocking
• Run the pump all night so circulation doesn’t stop halfway
• Check filter pressure the next morning for a spike
• Do an overnight loss check when there’s no sun involved

If you lose a lot with zero sunlight, that’s demand. If it only crashes when the sun hits it, that points more toward low stabilizer. Once I broke the demand cycle and cleaned my cartridge filter thoroughly, chlorine finally started holding past sunrise instead of disappearing like magic.

If it keeps dropping to nothing overnight, something in that water is still hungry.
