Yeah, it’s pretty common, but there’s usually more going on than just “rain = cloudy.”
What I eventually figured out is that heavy rain dumps a ton of really fine stuff into the pool that test strips don’t tell the whole story about. Dust, pollen, soil, even whatever was sitting on the deck gets washed in. Chlorine can still read “ok,” but it’s busy chewing through all that new organic load, so the water looks dull instead of sparkling. I’ve also noticed pH tends to drift after storms, even if the strip doesn’t scream red flags, and that alone can make water look hazy.
Another big clue for me was filter pressure. After storms, my pressure would creep up 2 to 4 psi within a day, meaning the filter was catching a lot more junk than usual. If I didn’t clean or backwash, the cloudiness would just hang around no matter how long I ran the pump. Brushing right after the rain helped too, otherwise that fine debris just stays suspended.
So yeah, it’s normal in the sense that rain causes it, but if it happens every single time, it’s worth checking how fast your filter loads up and whether pH is drifting. Once I started cleaning the filter sooner after storms instead of just running longer, the water cleared way faster. Anyone else notice their filter pressure jump after heavy rain?
