Why does my vacuum keep losing suction halfway through cleaning?

Whenever I hook it up the suction is strong at first but then it slows down and the vacuum barely moves. Backwashed the filter but it didn’t solve it. Hose looks fine too. What am I missing here?

In my case it was just air sneaking in through a tiny crack on the hose that I couldn’t see at first. Another time it was a clogged basket in the pump. Check both because even a small blockage or leak can kill suction quickly.

I had the same issue! It turned out my pump was getting airlocked—had to backflush the pump itself. Also, check your hose clamps sometimes they loosen up and let air in. If not, check the impeller for any debris buildup. Been a game changer for me. Have you looked into airlocks?

I had the same issue! It turned out my pump was getting airlocked. I had to backflush the pump and also checked the filter basket because it can get clogged. After that, the vacuum worked smoothly again. Also, don’t forget to check the hose for any tiny cracks, sometimes those are the culprits for losing suction power.

I ran into something like this not long ago and it turned out to be way simpler than I expected. The suction would start strong but then fade off, and after checking everything else I noticed the pump lid wasn’t sealing completely.

A tiny bit of air was sneaking in and killing the flow. Once I cleaned the lid O-ring and reseated it, the vacuum kept steady the whole time. Might be worth giving that a look if you haven’t already, sometimes it’s the little leaks that don’t show right away.

I’ve had this issue too! My vacuum kept losing suction, and it turned out to be air getting into the pump. After cleaning and checking the filter again, it worked fine. Also, don’t forget to check the hose for any tiny cracks that could affect suction power.

One thing that hasn’t been mentioned yet is what’s happening at the skimmer while you’re vacuuming. If the weir door is sticking or partially closing once the pump’s been running a bit, it can choke off flow and make the vacuum feel like it’s dying. It’ll start strong, then fade as the door flutters or closes.

Another sneaky one is fine debris settling in the hose itself. Even if the hose looks clear, very fine silt can collect in low spots as you move around, slowly restricting flow until suction drops. Lifting sections of the hose vertically while the pump’s running can sometimes flush that out.

Also check that you’re not pulling from multiple suction lines at the same time. If the main drain is still open, all that suction gets split, and as resistance builds during vacuuming, the head loses drive.

I’d try: lock suction to the skimmer only, watch the weir door while running, and periodically lift the hose to purge it. Those fixes solved it for me when everything else checked out fine.

I have seen this when fine debris slowly loads the filter or pump basket even after a backwash, suction fades and the vacuum stalls, so I always check and clean the pump basket and then do a deeper filter clean, and after I started using aquadoc pool filter cleaner the suction stayed strong the whole time.
