Wind-driven mess is one of those problems where you have to work with it instead of fighting it nonstop. One thing that helped me was changing when I clean. If I know a windy afternoon or evening is coming, I don’t bother doing a full cleanup beforehand. I wait until the wind dies down, then skim once, instead of cleaning twice and feeling defeated both times.
Another trick is managing where debris lands. Fine dust and small leaves often blow straight across the surface and then sink when the pump shuts off. Running the pump earlier in the morning, before winds pick up, keeps that stuff suspended and gives the skimmer a head start. It won’t stop the junk from coming in, but it reduces how much ends up glued to the floor.
Covers do help, but they’re situational. A solid cover keeps debris out but can be a pain to put on and off for single windy days. A lightweight mesh cover is easier and still blocks a surprising amount of airborne junk, especially dust and seed fluff. Even using it only on the worst days can cut your cleanup time in half.
At some point it’s less about eliminating debris and more about shortening how long it stays in the pool. Once you focus on that, windy days get a lot less frustrating.
